Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

They're here!!! Tom # 132/300 and David # 139/300.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

David's base isn't immediately lighting up. Tom's is.

But here we are: The two greatest Doctors ever arriving on Christmas Eve to save me! :)

And they're both amazing. David's likeness is triple-first rate. Tom's looks very young and frightened, but also accurate. Tom's accessories are astonishing and David has a few I didn't realize he came with - like the hand holding a key to the Tardis!

Tom's scarf's colors look dodgy, but it looks nice anyway.

I paid through the nose ("Who, knows.... Who nose...") for these guys and don't regret a penny. Thank you, Big Chief!!!!

Now, how about Pertwee???

EDIT: Okay. I opened David's base up. The base will light up, unless the batteries are pressed down on, which means it will not light up when I screw the base closed. Hmm.... Any ideas?

EDIT EDIT: Okay. It seems the problem is a bad battery. If I only use one of them in David's base, the base glows dimly. When I add the second it shuts off. (The other one on its own doesn't work) So, I'll splash out on the $2.25 for a couple more batteries and hope that fixes it.

Fedex rant begins.
So, unlike most people it seems - I did get shipping notices for Tom and David and both were to be delivered on Monday. I immediately go line to do the online signature release for both. On Monday on the way home I get a call from Fedex telling me the delivery center is open late if I want to pick up the package that the driver refused to deliver because it needed a signature. She found that I had done the signature release thing, and didn't know why the driver hadn't left it. So I went to pick up both my packages - confident that 2 packages destined for the same address, leaving the same place at the same time would both arrive at the same time.

Not so - Tom landed safely, but David was stuck somewhere in New Jersey with no sign that he'd be moving any time soon.

Got home early today - note on the door - Fedex had tried to deliver David - but once again the signature release had been ignored. ARGGH. I HATE FEDEX.:balrog
rant over.

Tom is gorgeous! I had been impressed with the pics so far, but the impact in hand is overwhelming. I LOVE the posable scarf - he can be dashing down a corridor with the scarf sticking out behind him.

No problems with the body either - stands on his own, holds any pose. The hands are an unbelieavably soft material - I'd be afraid to breath on them after eating chilli they seem so fragile - but they hold the accessories okay - no droppage so far.
Couple of issues -
My base wouldn't light up though - I don't have these size batteries so I can't test if that is the problem. And after minimal play time the finish on the base gets scratched extremely easily.

But overall _ I'm very happy with Tom if and if FedEx ever decides to release 10 from his shipping prison - hopefully I'll feel the same about him.

I think FEDEX is just swamped right now. Congrats on getting Tom. Maybe when David shows up you can see if it is a battery issue? I ordered a pair on Amazon for 2.25.

Yes, I'm sure they're swamped. That's why they should honor online signature confirmations so they won't have to be lugging packages back and forth multiple times...

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

UGH. That sounds awful. :(

Glad you're liking Tom, though! You too, Niceman!
I actually really like the hands, for the most part. It's nice to not have to worry about swapping hands and breaking pegs. BUT, I do wish he could hold his hat. I haven't tried to see if Hot Toys hands can fit on them, but it looks like the peg might be a bit small for that.

The only thing that kind of bugs me about the figure, now (other than the easily scratched mirror surface) is the color of the scarf. I can totally live with it, don't get me wrong, but I got "The Invisible Enemy" on DVD for Christmas from my Secret Santa. Not the show's finest hour, but it was the first time I'd watched a 4th Doctor episode in quite a while. And the colors just really are WAY off. I don't know if they were limited by the production technique or what, but if they do future expansion kits they really should revisit this.

For those with battery issues, have you tried wedging some tinfoil in there to make the fit tighter? Not sure if it'll help, but I've encountered weak light like that before and it sometimes helps to force the battery harder onto the connection.

Yeah, him not being able to hold the hat is a fail. Right now I have the hat sitting on my BBP K-9! I guess a HT hand would be the solution. I'm a big fan of the BC hands, but this is a failure when it comes to the hat.

I added Matt in between the two of them. He looks like a companion. lol

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

Haha... Matt looking more like a companion. I like it.

Those hands are the things that I thought so bad in all the original proto pics of 11, but then when I got it, I was very impressed. The more solid HT hands actually look too big by comparison.

I've still got a few days before I get my 4th, and a couple of weeks after that for 10 (or the other way around ).. My dad hasn't sent the second out, and didn't mention which was sent first. Till then, I'm enjoying the pics here and setting up a display area for it ( them).

Most encouraging, is that everyone who's getting thee seems to really like em.

So the 4th Doctor Stand, is it supposed to be blue, or be a mirror? There is a thin blue film on the base...is that just to cover the mirror in the box?

Yes. The blue film is supposed to be taken off. But since I've been hearing the base scratches fairly easily you might want to leave it on.

Well kudos to fedex for being open on Christmas - picked up David - I'll wait to open him when watching Time of the Doctor...

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

Okay - good news for those with non-lighting bases! I took the batteries from the working 10s base and put in the non-working 4s base and it lit up! So all those with non lighting bases - it's probably the batteries.

I guess those little plastic tabs in all the Hot Toys figures actually do keep the batteries from discharging prematurely.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

My first post here. Hello all!

I got to pull my Tom from under the tree today. I must admit that seeing the prototype I had some minor reservations. Still, I thought, a 1/6 Tom? Only a thousand being sold? How could I not?

Having it in hand today all my reservations are gone. I love the head sculpt. If you tilt the head and get the arms a certain way then there is a little Tom on your shelf, ready to come to life. The five o'clock shadow is not too strong on mine, but more like a subtle shading (on screen he didn't really ever have stubble, but it does add a life-like quality to the figure).

The ankles are a bit weak but it is the same on my Hot Toys Jack Nicholson Joker, so I can't say Big Chief are any worse than their peers there. Oh and I suppose bubbles in the key to time, but that doesn't actually bother me. I never intended to pose the figure often with that accessory and the bubbles don't really make the key look that bad to me. It's like a key to time lava lamp. I understand if big fans of that season are miffed, though. Looks good sitting next to my base being snatched at by a fiendish hand of Eldrad.

I'm not listing positives because everything else seems pretty top notch as far as I can see. It's a case of 'much better in the hand then in the advertisements'.

I'd post a photo but I am too much of a newbie to be allowed to post images yet!

Hope everyone else is having as much fun with their figures as I am with mine. I am a little boy again. The Tom Baker fan in me is delighted!

Welcome to the boards! Happy Holidays!

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

Just in case it helps anyone, it's an easy swap for all the parts onto a Hot Toys body. I popped my 2nd Tom onto a necked goemon body and he looks great. HT pegs go into the BC shoes very nicely, although is recommend heating the shoe socket up with a hair dryer before connecting to save the risk of cracking the plastic. If anything I'd say he looks better on the HT body as the clothes for very nicely on mine.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

Oh and be careful of the little poppers that do the clothes up, like the Hot toys ones they are easy to break
