Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

A few weeks ago, I posted a picture from Hot Toys with the re-sculpt of Jonesy.

Meh.

Looks like Tom Cruise.

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

but it's Neca, whose aliens are famous for their accuracy :)
i posted it to show that this cat seems to be impossible to sculpt even by Neca sculptor.

You are kidding, aren't you? :cuckoo:
nope, i'm absolutely serious. anybody who calls that crap accurate or good looking but claims to see wrong things about this sculpt is lying in one of those cases.

This one comes with a free teapot:

Never look at a gift teapot in the mouth.

Seriously though, there are some really good, lifelike cat figures out there from companies like Country Artists or Border Fine Art. But gauging scale is a problem.

I have one sixth scale cat, but he's the wrong colour. :slap

(Country Artists are especially good for dogs as they did a range of 1/6).

oh no, don't cheat.

it's the same level of face mistakes and very different level of aging mistake, but first one is praised and second one is flouted.
even the same cheap argument, involving imaginary judging crowd, was used in both threads:
"i showed photos to my friends and they knew exactly who it was"
"i showed photos to my friends and they didn't know who it was".

Ripley at least got normal mouth and nose, unlike toad mouth and giant clown nose of terminytur.

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

I love the "I showed this to person X" argument.

Every thread has it, every thread NEEDS it.

The cycle continues.

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

My personal fave: "I swear you could shrink the actor down to 1/6 scale and you still wouldn't be happy"

That's a very good side by side of Weaver and the figure (even if the angle is different).
It's easy to tell how the sculptor got it wrong. Weaver's face is very asymmetrical, and the sculptor (as is usual with HT) went for a more idealised look. It's akin to how Vader's mask looks odd when it's completely symmetrical.

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

Needs a ZOMG thread in the sandbox.

When people say that a figure resembles an actor's stunt double... do they actually know what the stunt double looks like?

If only the DX05 had looked like Vic Armstrong. :lol

This thread is ridiculous. Either the sculpt is really good or it's really bad. Do we need to repeat it over and over and over again for hundreds of pages? Let's just have a poll. Everyone votes once and let's be done with it.

Enter the self-appointed thread hall monitor... this thread is moving like clockwork.

My Jones isn't half bad, all things considered.

I always thought that Arnie sculpt was a little exaggerated with the nose and skin texture. Very Tommy Lee Jones-ish.

I am starting to come around on the Ripley sculpt, though. The altered Aliens hair photoshop makes me feel like the sculpted hair is really detracting from the likeness a bit. I was never a fan of sculpted hair for longer hair styles. It's fine for shorter hair and styles like crew cuts and stuff on men, but once it gets longer than about jaw length it starts to look odd.

I wonder if the hair is a separate sculpted piece like some of the past figures. Looks like it is. If it is, that may make things easier for people that wanted the rooted hair.

...I agree that this thread is ridiculous. How many 'perfect' sculpts have HT made so far? A handful? Or none? Why would this one be any different? I think we should be able to agree that for now it's within the standard...
