With Asmus quality control issues and Queen doing LOTR figures, Asmus is REALLY gonna need to up their game if they want to be doing LOTR figures.
No denying there have been issues - but unless you hand me a Thorin with mohair or silk hair and beard and genuine leather straps plus a carved wood pipe don't think I'd be much happier. It's not that Queen couldn't outdo ASMUS; I'm just very wary of the price point. If you pay enough you could get a flawless custom of Aragorn, say. Glass eyes, leather coat and boots, punched rooted hair. But how many of us could afford a 3,000$ figure?

Queen won't be doing the full Fellowship... so Asmus can rest easy.

They said specifically they wouldn't know what a 1/6th scale Frodo would even look like.

So... I'm stuck with my vampiric Frodo for now.

Yeah it's a balance for most collectors who aren't rolling in money. I'm mostly happy with my Asmus dwarves and I can't really see myself buying a $300+ Thorin or even Gimli for that matter.

However, there are some characters I wouldn't hesitate to pay $300-$500 for if they're near perfect.
- Aragorn (Strider and Black Gate)
- Gandalf (both variants)
- Legolas
- Boromir (though I'm still interested to see Asmus' finished updated sculpt)
- Frodo (who is apparently not happening)
- Sam (doubtful)
- Lurtz
- Saruman

Exciting times with the possibilities being announced and speculated. I'm just at the point that I feel that prices are just getting out of control. I have to admit that I chuckle when I see posts saying, "...price sounds decent..." when referring to a $500 dollar price.

I think that in my case, it is the fact that my interests are so diverse that I just can't be paying these amounts on a constant basis.

Yea, when it comes to these higher priced figures, you gotta not only think really hard about if it's worth it, but also be really certain that it's something you actually want and not just caught up in the hype of it all. Lots of folks have gotten priced out in the last couple of years and I think it's worse if you collect multiple lines/franchises. I, myself, have gotten caught up in the last year of buying into multiple lines that I think I need/missed out on simply b/c I have more financial freedom to purchase stuff that I didn't while things were a little rocky. However, now that I've looked back, I'm going to purge the collection a bit.

Back on topic though, the thought of spending $500 on one single figure doesn't feel like a good idea, let alone decent, when it could possibly get you around 2 figures from other companies. I think that kind of talk is just a way some folks are rationalizing it for themselves, myself included. When I think about how much getting a custom sculpt costs, then adding in good paint work and possible hair rooting that gets you to around $1000 easy just for the sculpt, it's easier to rationalize spending $500-$1000 on two full figures that look to be of custom level without the custom price-tag. It's definitely a by character basis type thing for me. Not going to lie, I'd pay the current QS asking price for a dead-on looking Henry Cavill Superman like what I've seen from a few custom artists. Pretty much any Superman to be honest. But not a chance on Neo, let alone Matrix 4 Neo or any Dune character (no offense to those that like Dune, just not my thing). Gandalf and Legolas will need to look ridiculously good and much better than Asmus for me to consider.

There’s no way I’m regularly spending $500 on a commercial action figure. $350 for GtG was already pushing the envelope, and even then the figure had issues, e.g., the eyes and the hat. For that price point it should have been flawless. I’m trusting that Crown GtW will be basically perfect. There is no excuse for it not to be. That’ll probably be it for my Asmus LotR purchases. I‘ve got my fellowship which is what I set out to collect. Maybe an improved replacement for a character from the fellowship of nine here and there where the price justifies it.

I’m moving towards custom kitbashes anyway. Which at least with the first one I’ve done it ended up running $500-600. I can do that with characters for a fantasy D&D game where it’s fairly easy to pick up clothing and gear on eBay. Most of the cost is having an artist create the STL file for the head sculpt plus print, and then having it professionally painted. I have 5 more of those to kitbash.

I’m hoping to complete the ZSJL Knightmare League (now need only Deathstroke and Mera) Via third party companies. If Discovery brings Zack Snyder back to make JL 2 and 3 and there are spinoff movies (Batfleck, solo Cavill Superman, Cyborg, Martian Manhunter, Deathstroke, Atom, etc.) I’ll keep buying those figures from Hot Toys. I’ll continue buying the Watchmen line for Soosoo.

So I’m still continue with this hobby for a good while yet. But no way am I regularly paying $500 for a figure other than my one kitbash per year plan.

KGHobby offers the two pack rooted hair Joker for EUR875 with 3% discount for paying it in full. Add about EUR90 (EMS shipping to EU) for shipping to a total EUR965 which brings the price for a single figure to EUR483. Now I have ordered twice from them and both times did not pay import and tax, so IF that can happen again, this is not a bad price for a single figure of that quality for me. If QS brings Legolas and Aragorn with rooted hair at that price I will definitely buy them. Too bad Asmus failed Frodo. But I will not buy GtG from QS for two reasons: 1) Crown GtG is not that bad and is accessory loaded and 2) It would be hard to unload him at EUR390 that I pad to have him.

Matrix 4 Neo
LOL you'd have to pay me to own anything from Matrix 4
or any Dune character (no offense to those that like Dune, just not my thing).
Dune is one of my favourite novels of all time and I enjoyed the recent film, but it doesn't lend itself to action figures. I think this price point will work best for both interesting looking properties and those that have already stood the test of time.

Hmm, would I drop 500-600$ for a top of the line Thorin? Maybe/probably since it's my favorite Middle Earth character. But then I'd want some sort of companion piece - young Bilbo and Gandalf, at minimum. So that's another $1200 more. In theory. (Tho for the price point IMO ASMUS Thorin is one of their finest; great sculpt and they really pulled off a fairly elaborate layered costume with accessories, so that $600 had better buy a lot).

Argh, except for specialty pieces like Thranduil on throne (or I plan to get Kuill + blurrg, for instance $$$$$$!!!!) I already hit the wall with a lot of pricing, and then WETA sends out an e-mail saying THEIR prices are going up, too. :crying

Thing is, am sure when ASMUS started their figure line they ran some cost evaluations. I assume they did, as it would be stupid not to. What customers might feel like paying, what materials could be used to keep to a certain price point. E.g. you can always go luxury but will you have enough customers to justify the cost? Queen studios stuff seems to sell out - high priced with a niche market. Limited production. Which is another way to do do business.

I just don't know if I wanna pay for reboots of figures I already own. But yeah, it's hard at times to talk yourself out of a hyped beautiful figure. Mostly I've been able to do that with poly statues. Guess it's up to the individual if you are going to be thrilled with your $500 figure or hate yourself a year from purchase. Thing with ASMUS has been, the price hasn't made me writhe in shame and guilt.:lol Besides that, yeah, there have been issues. But being a costume/detail junkie I'm fascinated by what ASMUS has been able to pull off, to-scale.

Yep, the GTG prototype was honestly perfect and the dropoff from production is just insane. I've been trying to get rid of my Crown Gandalf for a few weeks now with no luck lol.
Galadriel too suffered from prototype to production issues. Also she is undersized which is so frustrating since she was as tall as Gandalf in the movies barefoot. Of course in the books she has several inches on him.

Galadriel is still a nice enough figure but yeah the drop off in quality killed me on that one since we’ll probably never get another Galadriel figure. Not while most of us are still collecting anyway.

Galadriel is probably the single most disappointing release in the Asmus LOTR lineup after Aragorn (pick your flavor—I have them all and still cringe). She is undersized with Mattel level Barbie HS and a fish tank diorama base? Crapola.

As long as they offer a sculpted hair version of every figure I will support the line. I stopped buying the Asmus figures once they started doing doll hair.

Well, even the sculpted hair TDK Joker looks great, so if they do Legolas like that, then Asmus is dead for me. God, I hope they do Aragorn, Bilbo, Frodo, and Sam too! Then I would have the chance to build my display with proper figures. Its just that Asmus failed some figures too much for my taste. I can live with crown GtG.

I thought the mirror was a really cool diorama.
Ditto. Also Thranduil's base and both Gandalfs. As for probably remarks about plastic plants, there's no easy answers. You can use silk, but that collects dust. You can use real plants, and they get dry and brittle. Plus the scale issue.

Galadriel's height doesn't bother me since I use risers with her anyway. She's exquisite - wasn't even gonna get her at first.

For me - am no fan of plastic hair. IMO long hair characters especially. A vinyl hair Thorin, Thranduil, Gandalf, Galadriel would look ridiculous IMO. Plus the articulation thing. The custom rooting jobs on this forum really bring figures alive (tho, obviously, the owners know what they are doing).
