Re: SSC Hammerhead 12 inch revealed tomorrow, July 2nd!

Never understood why people refuse to acknowledge his name. Same goes for Snaggletooth, Squidhead, and the like. :huh

What's wrong with my answer?: Because it's contrived stuff created after the fact by licensees completely separated from the creation of the movies/characters themselves. It's the lamest kind of retro-fitting.

I think that side of the argument is pretty clear. :dunno

"Momaw Nadon" didn't even exist as a name until 12 years after the movie! How is that any different from fan-fic? Just because it's licensed as a product? Think about it.

That said, I fully expect Sideshow will call the figure by his revisionist-history EU name. But I certainly never will.

We call them Hammerhead, Snaggletooth, Squidhead, etc... because that's what they were named when the movies came out... and were for many, many years (decades even). Those are the names we acknowledge and recognize. I know some of you younger fans can't appreciate that, but still...

Re: SSC Hammerhead 12 inch revealed tomorrow, July 2nd!

Oh, they most definitely did. It was called "Had Abbadon" in the early prequel outlines (and that name goes back to the idea of the Imperial Homeworld in Lucas' notes for the OT).

I saw some old, old artwork of the Emperor in his chair in the middle of a lava lake. I do believe it was called Had Abbadon.

Correct. That was early concept art for ROTJ, actually. In the early concepts, the Imperial City/Had Abaddon (now Coruscant) had underground catacombs with lava lakes and caves, not dissimilar to the Temple of Doom under Pankot Palance.

Re: SSC Hammerhead 12 inch revealed tomorrow, July 2nd!

Yeah, because those things include EU stuff along with movie canon stuff. It's the main reason why I ignore the starwars.com Databank and why the new SW Encyclopedia is one of the only SW reference books I have no interest in owning.

Because that was all Licensing (i.e. $$$$) and it's easier for those yahoo's to come up with silly, contrived names for individual characters than to stick with something simple like Hammerhead, Snaggletooth, Walrusman, Squid Head etc.

It's symptomatic of the #1 problem with 99% of the EU: it tries way too hard, and the result is glorified, licensed fan-fic. The greatness of SW was almost always in the sublime... something the EU does not get at all. And neither does Lucas... anymore. That's also a big reason why the PT feels so disconnected to the original films.

So because you think it's a dumb name, it should be Hammerhead. Ok.

Yeah, after all of that it comes down to just me thinking it's a dumb name. :lol Did you even read what I wrote? The main problem is that is not his original name. It's a retrofit created by licenses. It's that simple. "Momaw Nadon" could be the coolest name ever... but that doesn't change the fact that it is a contrived creation that came from a licensed RPG a dozen years after the movie.

Re: SSC Hammerhead 12 inch revealed tomorrow, July 2nd!

he had lots of names. Everything is a work in progress until it's 'done' I've got the same books you guys do so I know all this crap just as much as you guys. Yes, Had abaodon was one of the names but he changed lots of stuff. Courscant is allot different for Hab abadons description. hell, wasn't endor supposed to be Had abadon? My rcal isn't the greatest.

But basically, thtere's already been several figures of Momaw with that name on it, so until they aprove somehting else(and on such a background character why would they) its Momaw.

It was in a role playing book to fleshout background characters! same as garindan, and Labria. Back then there wasnt allot of merchandise. so when the figures came out in 95 they used the name.

Re: SSC Hammerhead 12 inch revealed tomorrow, July 2nd!

Coruscant is an old, old name though too. Han is a Corellian and he mentions the "corellian ships"... aren't corellians from Coruscant?

Re: SSC Hammerhead 12 inch revealed tomorrow, July 2nd!

Though Lucas may have flirted with different names, Coruscant and The Imperial City/Had Abaddon are the exact same world. Ralph McQuarrie even did concept paintings back in the early 80's (Timothy Zahn named it Coruscant in 1990 for "Heir To The Empire"):

And my point is that Lucas was going to call it "Had Abaddon" in the PT, but was told that the name was changed to Coruscant and that the new name had become well established (and popular) with the fans. And all I was pointing out there is that Lucas (and those very close to the creation of the movies) obviously doesn't really know or care about the EU at all. Hence things like the Boba Fett backstory rewrite and the Karen Traviss/Mandalorian thing. The EU is not movie canon. Therefore retrofit EU names like "Momaw Nadon" are not canon.

Re: SSC Hammerhead 12 inch revealed tomorrow, July 2nd!

The droid factory was indeed awesome. :rock I even liked the other playsets, with the cardboard backgrounds. Remember when they re-used the same Tatooine base for Hoth (just molding it white instead of tan)? Ah... the good ole days. :hi5:

Re: SSC Hammerhead 12 inch revealed tomorrow, July 2nd!

I'm with you, Irish, on this whole thing. But I do believe Coruscant, the planet capitol name, has been around longer than 1990. Seems to me I've known that Coruscant was the city-central in the SW universe for as long as I can remember. I remember that because I never really liked that name. Maybe Had Abbadon was suppose to be the Sith hideout or secret lair or something.

I don't know, I used to know this stuff a lot better when I was 14 and I cared.

Re: SSC Hammerhead 12 inch revealed tomorrow, July 2nd!

I grew up calling him Hammerhead... and that is what I will continue to call him.

Re: SSC Hammerhead 12 inch revealed tomorrow, July 2nd!

I'm not going to get excited over a pic of a belt.
I'll wait to see more pics before passing judgement.
As for the name I like Hammerhead.
When STAR WARS 1st came out my best friend loved Hammerhead and when we played with our little SW figures he made Hammerhead the waiter of the Cantina. He even swears to this day that he saw a shot of Hammerhead balancing a teacup on his head in the original SW. LOL

Did you ever see the sneak preview of the headsculpt (a couple months back)? They even showed one being painted. Looked fantastic.

But, yeah... can't wait to see the finished prototype (and pre-order it).

Blame society for that. Today's kids need so hard to be known for putting their mark on things. Look at music, what was once just metal is now labeled things like Thrashcore or deathmetal, etc. Hell, even debunking Pluto as a planet. It's pretty lame the lengths some *********s will go to so that they can read their names in magazines.

Re: SSC Hammerhead 12 inch revealed tomorrow, July 2nd!

Whereas, I'm not interested in another OT alien, I am interested to see how they handle Hammerhead's exposed joints on the arms and legs.
