12" Inch Figure Dewback A New Hope

Wow. Lots of talk about this piece. I think a $300 price tag is quite the deal for a statue this size. And yes, I consider it a statue/environment, not a 1/6 scale figure. And I'm fine with that.

It seems to me with all the debate over whether this should have been articulated or not, that Sideshow (depending on sales) will have a very compelling reason to release a new dewback in the future, something with articulation, which would allow them to utilize existing molds with a minimum of new scupting. That'd be a great way to get people to buy 2 of these things!

Ok. Now we're getting to the crux of the information!

Not only is this glorious looking TREX mass produced, buts its only 7" tall. Ok $17.

When you increase the size of something from 7" to 21" you aren't simply tripling the size.

Imagine a figure 7x2x5=70cubic inches. Triple its size 21x6x15=1,890 cubic inches or a factor of 27! 3x3x3. So $17x27=$432.

Anyways...

Yes, the price is good, for a statue. GG did a statue that was cheaper, a few years ago. When you add the Trooper into the mix, it's around double what the GG was when it came out.

Cheaper, but also a lot smaller than this.

GG also has a Bantha and Sandperson which is 18"X12" for $239... this Dewback is 16"X30".

Chairs, thrones, walls, logs, huts, chess tables, nooks, etc.

I don't really think the Dewback quite qualifies as a "doll" or "action figure" to begin with, so personally, I don't think it really defeats the purpose of the line. Its really about where you draw your lines. We can really nit pick various elements of figures to decide where something crosses the line. Lack of articulated fingers and toes or sculpted shoes and hair can all be used to nitpick the lack of "playability" on something. Its pretty subjective.

I don't agree, at least to an extent. All of the above are stationary pieces, some (chairs/thrones) with limited movement were needed.

All of the above are objects, the Dewback's a creature. They gave us creature's with articulation before, as mentioned before in the thread, it wouldn't have been a stretch to include in this. I just don't think it should have been made out of polystone, it should have been the same as the other creatures.

Perhaps I'm just worried I'd get this, then the trooper would fall backward and break the tail.

All those items are inherently inanimate. As mentioned, this is a creature...quite different than a wall or a chair.

This, like all statues, have no "playability" at all. Its just a display piece for an action figure line. And since it's not an inanimate object it should have some "action" feature to it...IMHO.

Articulation, detail, weight, ... what ever.
I still say, it should have been a toy, and not a statue. And on top of that, it should/could have been much cheaper too.

But if this Dewback becomes a success, it seems that Sideshows did the right thing, from a entrepreneurial point of view. I guess that would also mean, that we could expect more of this 'cross over' nonsense in the future.

Ok, to each his/her own. I never looked at them as toys. Hasbro makes toys. The SS figures are quite fragile to play with. As a kid i would not have fun with em.

That's a little vague. The porcelain figures my granny had are also collectible figures you know. And some of them where pretty valuable too! This subject has been discussed a few times in the past, so, I'm not going to reopen it, and leave it at that. If it makes you feel more comfortable to refer to 12" figures as collectible figures, and you don't consider them to be toys, I'm cool with that! I bet you are not the only one.

I can almost guarantee we will never see something as large as a Snowspeeder. One is being made in the custom section and it is MASSIVE!!!

At the end of the day you either like the piece or not... I personally like the Dewback and feel it will fit in well with my collection. If there were anyway I could see it looking as nice and having articulation I'd be all for an articulated figure; but past a rubber body and internal skeleton I just don't see that working out.

But he does have some soft goods... you can always "pose" those to get unique looks

I'd agree their roots are toys. A kid could definitely play with these... and in many cases the 1/6 SW line (with the exception of lightsabers) would hold up pretty well to play. But obviously the cost per figure make it pretty unlikely any sane parent would drop $90 on Greedo when they could get 10 3 3/4" figures for the same price.

So at their heart I consider them toys, but the collectible factor weights in pretty heavily.

yeah, that's right, obviously these where not made to be played with, but at the root, they are (expensive) toys. Just calling a horse a horse.
