Rex Tremendae Majestatis
I'm depressed.
For years we have (or at least I have) been living in Alien and Predator heaven. Ever since McFarlane announced their Movie Maniacs 5 Boxed Set -Alien & Predator, a new era was ushered in: the era of the articulated, highly detailed alien and predator figures. A few months later Aoshima unveiled theirs and soon after we were being hit by statues, busts and other memorabilia and collector's items from all kinds of different sources: Palisades, Marmit, Sideshow all contributed and we even saw a resurgence of the old Tsukuda figures.
Finally Hot Toys stepped into the game and made every fanboy's dream come true with the first figures from AvP and the Colonial Marines from Aliens.
In these fantastic couple of years Hot Toys has released more and better figures than we ever had the right to dream of. And NECA has also jumped into the game to fill the void left by McFarlane, delivering stunningly beautiful and accurate figures from our favorite monsters. Even Medicom revisited Alien to give ultimate man-in-a-suit figure.
Now, on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the movie that started it all, we await the release of the Hot Toys Predator, Dutch and Billy, and the unveiling of their Giger Alien.
Does that mark the end of an era?
It is hard to imagine Hot Toys making more aliens or predators, after all, they have released most, if not all of the creatures. And it's hard to imagine either line being able to survive on the strength of the human characters alone. The only creature left to do is the queen, but Hot Toys have been reluctant to confirm that, even hinting that they would look at other scales.
NECA has not made any public announcements, but we know Kyle "Tankman" would love to make more figures from both franchises, so that's up in the air. Unfortunately, they seem to have no plans whatsoever to release their figures in 1/6 scale.
Medicom is pretty inscrutable as to their intentions, but there's nothing that might lead us to believe they would make more figures.
Palisades is no more.
Sideshow have released busts and dioramas of all the main creatures.
Finally, Revoltech announced an alien figure last year, to be released in 09 but we have had no news since then. Also, it's anyone's guess whether this would be a one-off or part of a series.
So is that it?
Is this year to mark the end of the Alien and Predator figures? Just how long will we have to wait until another company (or the same ones) revisits these franchises?
