Just saw it and I have to say that I thought it was much better than Sin City, which I didn't think was that great.

The reviews are calling it a videogame and saying the violence is so over the top it makes it silly, but I can't really agree with that.

I enjoyed it for a comic book movie. After reading that Cage's abs were CGI in Ghost Rider though, I found myself wondering if these guys bodies were similarily enhanced.

I'll probably try and see it in IMAX too.

According to Gerard Butler in an interview on Good Morning America, the cast of the Spartans had to work out 6 hours a day, 2 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon and 2 in the early evening. He said it was grueling but necessary. I'm leaning towards less CGI involved but after seeing David Wenham I was surprised to see Faramir so buff....

on the HBO 300 First Look one thing they talked about specifically was the training of the Spartans.
Snyder asked for a cast of very fit men and then trained them aonther 2 months to try to turn them into machines physically. Zack said he did the training with them as well to help form a bond between the director and the cast.

.. and its what got my wife to the theater with me. :lol

"300" racks up record body count at box office

Heads rolled at the weekend box office in North America as the blood-soaked ancient epic "300" slaughtered its foes in spectacular fashion.

The grim warrior tale sold an estimated $70 million worth of tickets during its first three days of release, setting a new record for a March release, the film's distributor Warner Bros. Pictures said on Sunday.

Heading into the weekend, the most bullish oracles had forecast an opening in the $50 million range. The special-effects extravaganza, with a largely unknown cast, cost in the mid-$60 million range to produce, the Time Warner Inc-owned studio said.

Scottish actor Gerard Butler stars as Leonidas, the hunky king of the Spartans, who leads 300 of his warriors to glorious death at the Battle of Thermopylae against a massive Persian army commanded by the fey king Xerxes (Brazilian actor Rodrigo Santoro). Zack Snyder ("Dawn of the Dead") directed the adaptation of comic book writer Frank Miller's graphic novel.

"300" earned largely positive reviews, despite or because of its myriad decapitations and balletic battlefield carnage. The last few chart-toppers, incumbent champ "Wild Hogs," "Ghost Rider" and "Norbit" were slammed by the critics.

FEMALE APPEAL

Audiences were "hungry to go to something that looks this unique," said Mark Canton, one of the film's producers.

Even though "300" is tailor-made for male moviegoers, it also rated highly with women, because the filmmakers enlarged the role of Leonidas' queen (played by Lena Headey) to make her a "true partner" of the king, Canton said.

Its achievement was all the more noteworthy given that the previous record-holder for the month, 2006's "Ice Age 2: The Meltdown," with $68 million, was a family-oriented cartoon, while "300" is an unabashedly gruesome spectacle with an "R" rating that prevents viewers under 17 attending without adult supervision.

In fact, the opening for "300" ranks as the third-highest for an R-rated movie, behind "The Matrix Reloaded" ($91 million) and "The Passion of the Christ" ($83 million).

"300" also opened in a few small Asian markets, and reaches Britain in two weeks, said Canton. Action-packed period epics, such as 2004's "Troy," often do much better overseas.

Walt Disney Co.'s surprise hit "Wild Hogs," starring John Travolta, Martin Lawrence, William H. Macy and Tim Allen as unlikely road warriors, slipped to No. 2 with $28 million; its 10-day total rose to $77.4 million.

The next three movies were separated by less than $100,000, and rankings could change when final data are released on Monday. Disney's childhood saga "Bridge to Terabithia" rose one to No. 3 with $6.9 million, followed by Columbia Pictures' Nicolas Cage action movie "Ghost Rider" and Paramount Pictures' serial-killer thriller "Zodiac" with about $6.8 million each.

"Bridge to Terabithia" has earned $67.0 million after four weeks, and "Ghost Rider" $104.1 million, also after four weeks. "Ghost Rider" is the first 2007 release to cross the century mark; the "Ice Age" sequel took the honors last year in the second week of April. "Zodiac" has $23.7 million after two weeks. Columbia Pictures is a unit of Sony Corp . Paramount Pictures is a unit of Viacom Inc.

In Ghostrider he wasn't enhanced at all in that scene. A lot of people thought he was but in a recent interview on comingsoon.net they talked with Nicolas Cage and he said it wasn't changed.

And yeah, all of the muscles they have in 300 are real.

I don't see why people wonder whether their muscles are enhanced. Thoses guys are impressive but it's not that hard to have their bodies if you train really hard (which they did)

It takes a little more than training hard to get in that kind of shape. I read an article about how much time and effort Butlet put into his workout regimine. I could never work out or train my body that hard (and I work out everyday). Trust me, there were no CGI abs in that movie, and they probably love the fact that they were in such phenomenol shape, you'd think so.

Congratz to Frank Miller and the cast and crew of 300!I think many critics and people didn't expect it would get this much attention! :chew

And a big F U to the critics who just nitpick at every thing about this movie. It was supposed to be violent,it was supposed to look different and somewhat "artsy"..it was based on the graphic novel based on the Battle of Thermopylae NOT based on the actual battle itself. Some movie critics are just so stupid that they don't do any research on the actual source materials.

This movie is certainly Oscar-worthy and I hope it is not ignored!

Wow, I just saw it today. Amazing movie. And the critics are so completely wrong. The effects are just awesome and it doesn't seem over the top serious either. I definitely have to get HD-DVD for this.

If there is an Imax near you, you have to see it that way. Period. I love that they just opened a new Imax 10 minutes from where I live.

Glad to see it's off to such a start. I thought it would be a nice weekend for 300 when every show was sold out till 10:40pm. :lol

In San Antonio, there are actually 2 Imax theatres. There is one downtown that has 2 screens, one for regular Imax movies and one for 3d Imax movies, and the one that just opened out closer to where I live, so if there is more than one film playing at a time in Imax there is a good chance it will still be playing near me. I have 2 Imax theatres within 25 miles of my house.

I know how you feel. For some reason last year they didn't play Superman Returns 3d in the Imax downtown. The closest it was showing was in Austin.

OK, seventy million dollars this weekend.

I am crossing my fingers that this gets the ball rolling on Watchmen with a healthy budget and studio willingness to leave Snyder alone and allow him to make it the way he wants. If he can go straight from not messing up a Frank Miller adaptation to not messing up an Alan Moore adaptation, then I think he will establish himself as the greatest thing ever to happen to comic book movies.

(That is, if he didn't already do that this weekend...)

This was originally rated R in Australia..(which means restricted to people over 18 years..), but it was re-rated, on appeal, and is now MA15+, which means people under 15 years, must be accompanied by their parent or guardian..I am wondering, if to get this lesser rating, whether the film had to be edited.....I hope not!:emperor

I suppose there will be the customary unrated directors cut on DVD anyway..:D

I wish.... I have a few Imax theaters a few hours away from me and same deal... no 300 yet. Hope they get it sooner or later... Really want to see it again, but on a screen big enough to showcase it's awesomeness... :lol
