smaller than you'd think. lots of teases of things you want to see but no close ups. not very satisfying, but better than nothing.

This, exactly. If you've seen their video series of their work flow, etc, you've seen everything in this book. Not much larger than a DVD box. $18, is pretty cheap, though.

Does it show pictures of the factory where the majority of their 1/6th offerings are ruined by crappy production and lousy paint apps?

And cheap materials, yes it shows some of that.
