Hi everyone,

I was thinking of commissioning a custom figure but don't know much about the process. Are there any artists you guys would recommend for the job? My understanding is different artists will do different things, some do headsculpts, some do the paint, some do tailoring etc. I'm aware that the top-tier artists have a high price and long waiting times but I'm okay with that (just want to know who to approach).

Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

If you are commissioning a run of one figure then that will limit who you can work with as a lot of tailors will only do a run of 10 or more outfits as a minimum.

GeeWhiz Customs is a good option for a one off outfit. You will need to send them the body you wish to use and they will tailor the outfit to that body. They produce good quality work but it is not cheap. They can be reached on facebook but take orders by email (if you contact them on facebook they will give you the email address).

There are a lot of sculptors out there, some use traditional methods of sculpting and others digital. Prices vary wildly based on skill, experience and notoriety (I.e. how well known their brand is in the industry). Again if you are making one figure and not a run then some sculptors may not be within your reach because their commission cost will be very high (easier when you are splitting with a number of other people). Again, not a cheap option but Waruna Weligamage of Mancave Toys is a very good option for sculptor and he could also paint the head for you - he can be reached on facebook.

Without knowing your budget it is difficult to advise fully. The best thing to do is get on Instagram and start following artists and get a feel for the custom side of the hobby. May be message some of the artists and enquire about commissions.

Painting is a tough one as the most well known in the hobby are nearly always closed to commission and they only open up their lists for a very short period but there are lots of options out there, instagram rather than this place is the best place to look.

For accessories, two if the best are Fullmetal John and Doggiedoc Customs. Neither are cheap but the quality speaks for itself. Fullmetal John (he has an ebay store which you check out) will likely make any accessory for you but I'm not sure whether Doggiedoc is taking one off commissions at this time.

Good luck, it's a great hobby.

Thank you!! I'll make sure to check out the artists you mentioned. I I have contacted quite a few artists on instagram/facebook and other forums/groups; got a much better idea of cost and the overall process. And yeah, that's one thing I noticed to - individual commissions are always tricker and pricier to work with. That said, I'm going to bide my time and save up further (already sold a couple of figures just lying around). If I'm gonna go the custom route - I'd rather go big or just not commit at all lol.
