Interesting point dave, and actually, that kinda ties to a comment I've made before in how these films are kinda like sci-fi slasher flicks, so you could equate the Alien with Michael Myers in the original Halloween, there was no rationale behind Michael's killings, and there's nothing to say that the Aliens don't just do what they do with no rationale, not for food, they just are insatiable killing creatures who kill and carry on the species, nothing more.

The primary function of ANY species is survival. That is what makes the Alien one of the most efficient species of evolution of the fittest.

I know many people aren't fans of AVP, but I would like to see the hybrid Alien in AVP2, I think that could make for an interesting full sized creature taken further from the chestburster.

Why do we assume that the Aliens require the same kind of sustenance that we do? According to Ash it had the ability to polarize cells and replace them with new ones therefore it was implied that it was a completely self-sufficient organism that may not require nutrients or sustenance the way most lifeforms do.
The Alien has to eat something, it has to in order to increase it's mass. You can't go from a three foot chest burster to a seven foot Alien unless you eat.
What it eats could be very different, the Alien does have blood that will dissolve just about anything but it's own skin, so it's somewhat plausible that the alien eats metal and other inanimate objects from the ship.
However, the alien in Alien 3 went after that dead person lying on the track in the lead mold which startled that guy to start the piston. I think it did that to grab some food, what else would it want the dead guy for?

Then what did it eat between the time it burst from Kane's chest to when it attacked Dallas? There was no other food source on the ship, Ash noted that it polarized it's cells and replaced them with silicon. It grew to become a full-sized alien.

One thing that gets me too, is how exactly does the company know anything about the Alien to even want to send someone to bring one back, it'd be interesting to see some film give a story line to how the company came into knowledge of their existence..

That is what AVP was attempting to establish was that Weyland's "company" discovered the Aliens in the pyramid so they began searching for its origins.

I would say if that's the case, they were off target because the film leaves you to think there's a chance no one will ever know what happened out there.

The chick knows and she's got the scars to prove it. :lol

What did it eat?..what did the crew eat? There's food elsewhere on board the ship.
Okay then if the Alien ate silicone from the ship, what did the alien in alien 3 want with that dead body?

It's highly unlikey that the Alien went back to the kitchen and fixed himself some of that pasta that Kane was coughing up before he spawned it. :lol

As for the Alien3 "dog alien" it's likely that it was an instinct inheirited from the carnivorous traits of its host.

:lol No, but the Alien would've gone into the ship's food storage, just like a rat would.
If you subscribe to the "Dog Alien" origin, then that makes sense, but if you subscribe to the "Bull Alien" origin instead, then it wouldn't work. Personally I like the Bull origin more.

The bull origin was interesting but I didn't buy it. I like the dog birth much better because it actually does make sense.

I still buy Ash's explanantion that it is a completely self-sufficient lifeform. It shed its skin like a reptile and grew to a fully grown alien in a matter of hours so it metabolized its cells at a highly accelerated rate. We only see the sheddings of its skin and not any excremented waste lying nearby as a byproduct of mass consumption.

The odd thing about the bull to me is that in the world of Alien 3, I would think someone would be keeping an eye on the bulls and notice if a face hugger was on it, whereas the dog who just does his own thing and comes back to home when he's done fits more to run off and get one on him and all.

As far as collecting goes, I can't wait til my Alien Warrior arrives Thursday :)

Nothing in ALIEN indicated that. A Derelict ship with distress beacon is all that was revealed. You might have read that somewhere but it is not in the shooting script or the Movie. It also makes no sense based on that film and Aliens, no-one knew about them, not even Burke at the time. No one even believed Ripley's Account of the Nostromo and if they did, why build Atmosphere Processors to create an new Colony Environment on LV 426. Makes no sense IMO.
actually, Ridley Scott did give his version of the story... and that the aliens were in fact bio weapons developed and used by the pilot race (space jockey). but none of that was made clear in the film... which i love. it ain't alien no more if you know everything about it :D

Ridley says in his commentary that he was interesting in making Alien 5 by going back to the Space Jockey and exploring its origins. He must be getting senile in his old age because that was one of the creepiest things about the movie, almost even more than the Alien because we didn't know what the f@#$! that thing was. Some things a better left to the imagination.

I would love to see an origin story! I agree that the Space Jockey was one creepy looking f@#ker!

I think after all this discussion, that Fox should really look into greenlighting one more ALIEN film... Just one more....do it all proud....wrap it all up...

Since Sigourney is about too old to take it on again, I doubt there would be a followup one...so....
This prequel to the series idea, the Space Jockey's story...somehow...seems like a very viable thing.
If it were made by a good filmmaker, someone with some pith to their style, some visual fun, even Ridley Scott again, someone....then it could work!

WHY NOT?!?!?!?

And your discussions have pretty much nailed the ALIEN's life cycles...
I wonder if they even would.
What I wouldn't give for one, really WEIRD Alien movie! All aliens and space jockeys (or others!)...no humans...subtitled....and OFF THE HOOK! Wherever they come from, has to be the equivelent of Hell!

I'd love to see it.
