"but kids today Don't know what Cassette's and tape players are"

~Hasbro rep.

I'll never defend Hasbro as blindly as some people within the fandom do but they'd have a point if that was the reasoning for the new alt modes of Rumble & Frenzy.

As time passes & technology moves on certain alt modes become obsolete and the plain fact is that in 2010, a TF that turns into a cassette doesn't make much sense in a line aimed primarily at kids.

Silent Bob,
Intresting pickups, I considered getting the 2 FP Combaticons but decided against it when I discovered they were glorified Scouts and not Deluxe scale. They look nice though.

I have Thrust who is excellent and am undecided on Darkmount.
Takara's Animated Hot Rod looks pretty nice though so I may get him to go with Blurr.

yeah, it's their generic response whenever someone asks when we're going to get an updated soundwave that turns into a stereo like the G1 version.

I know what you mean about "Swindle" and "Blast off". They are very expensive for their size. I don't even own the Bruticus set and just got them to go with my Universe Onslaught. I love everything Fansproject does though and didn't want to miss out on them and then regret it later. They are fantastic quality, perfect upgrades to the Gen 1 figs and wonderfully poseable for such small figs. I understand that due to the cost they aren't everyones cup of tea though.

Darkmount (Straxus) is a lot of fun. I'm actually a bit giddy about him being a comic only character finally given toy form.

I am a big fan of Animated, and I know that not everyone is, but I honestly think that Blurr, Rodimus and Samurai Prowl are three of the best designed figs I have. Just fantastic! Animated Blurr is my fave Toy version of the character and until Masterpiece Rodimus comes out the Animated version is my fave of him too. If you pick him up "Rodimus Minor" I am sure you won't regret it !! I don't often pick up doubles of a figure but am getting my third version of the mold (clear) for x-mass !!!

awesome, thanks. I have a KO Mirage and it's every bit as good as the original Mirage I have, if not better, since it's so pristine. I've wanted a G1 Wheeljack for so long, but everyone I see, I'm never satisfied with the paint chips they always seem to have so I figured I'd just settle for a KO for now

Which is fair enough.

I think anyone still waiting for a new Soundwave that turns into a stereo should just get the G1 reissue or Music Label Soundwave because that's as close as they're gonna get.

The revelation of 2 of his little buddies as Deluxe sized tanks almost certainly means that if a new Soundwave is made, he's more likely to be some sort of military vehicle and hopefully a fairly big one.

It's bad news for those stuck in the 80's but good news for those of us that don't mind seeing something NEW every so often. I don't always like the changes but I can appreciate why it's done....to keep things fresh.

Incurable Collector,
You're quite right. The TFU line is basically Henkei version 2.0.
Most of those pics are of the Hasbro versions as official pics of the later TFU versions haven't emerged yet.

Silent Bob,
I think the thing with Darkmount is I don't really like his alt mode as I always think half tracks look like they chopped two other vehicles apart and stuck opposing bits together.

I do like his robot mode however and the stuff I've read about the interchangeable weapons sounds cool so I may give it a go at some point.

I did have a lot of Animated toys at one time but most were impulse buys as it was a rare case of being able to get TF's in stores and I went a bit crazy but I soon resold most of them as the QC in some cases was terrible and also because I needed cash for other stuff.

All I have left now are Leader Class Megatron, Voyager Prime, Deluxe Blurr and Activators Bumblebee but I might get Takara's Hot Rod and Activators Cliffjumper as well.

Pick up a Bruticus as soon as possible dude! 'Colossus' just looks fantastic! Just look at this review from Vangelus. :lol

He's supposed to be a tape, not a tank. Paaaaaassssssssss.

Didn't stop people from buying the PE Shadow Warriors.:monkey3 Though I have to admit that an anti-air tank is a bit of an odd choice...

It's bad news for those stuck in the 80's but good news for those of us that don't mind seeing something NEW every so often.
Here's the issue--there are two broad sets of TF collectors: 1) those nostalgic for their childhood, who collect because the toys remind them of a. . .simpler time; 2) those who just like the concept of Transformers and collect whatever Hasbro comes up with that they like the designs or quality of--Bayformers, Animated, old, new, foreign, domestic, etc.

Of course, many collectors start with nostalgia then transfer over to collecting new stuff that may have little to no relationship to the figures from 20-30 years ago. But they ultimately stay in the first category or transfer over to the second one.

In general, the nostalgic collectors of the 80s want Megatron to look like he did in the cartoon, and to turn into a gun. Not a tank, not a dinosaur, not a car, not a building, etc. Collectors of new stuff don't generally care what a character is called or transforms into. And unless they are familiar with the old cartoon, they probably don't know who Frenzy or Rumble is. If they don't care what they transform into, do they care about the character's bot mode or personality? Probably not. So why does Hasbro go half-way, doing a bot mode that reflects an old character but a completely different alt mode? They are appeasing those fans of "new stuff," but those folks could give a ____ who the character is. The nostalgic fans are half-way satisfied, so I don't know that they are getting more sales from this than if they created some completely new concoction. Ultimately, these figures are probably borne out of laziness, which is fine, but I still think it is lame. If they are gonna go the nostalgia route, go full out. If they are concerned that kids don't know what a cassette deck is, don't pretend these characters are Soundwave and his crew.

Sorry, but I have no idea what that is.

Thing is, the nostalgia buffs have several reissue lines to choose from and the KO's of G1 toys that haven't/won't get an official reissue appear to be getting much better in quality so if those designs are all those collectors want then why bother even looking at other lines in the first place?

Hasbro have to look at the bigger picture and the biggest amount of their sales likely comes from parents of kids that only got into the toys via the live action movies.

That they actually throw a considerably sized bone to old school fans via the various incarnations of the Classics is something they probably don't have to do but they do and still get blasted for not recreating G1 exactly even though many of the original alt modes are either outdated technology, subject to stricter licensing issues than in the 1980's or too controversial to risk bad press or potential lawsuits over..... that they released an Astrotrain that looked more like a dildo than a train without any flak from horrified parents is probably a minor miracle :)

I don't think they're always right in their policies, their European distribution for example is pathetic and I don't like every single modern upgrade of certain characters either ...........I'll take G1 Triple Changers, Mirage and Grimlock over their Classics counterparts every day of the week but I can see where they are coming from with some things and I think that refreshing elements of the characters designs every so often is necessary to maintain long term intrest from consumers.

Had they continued selling nothing but the same G1 molds every year like some people seem to want Transformers would have died a long time ago and certainly wouldn't have been considered a viable project for a big budget live action movie trilogy that will ultimately make them so much money that more nostalgia based stuff will inevitably be funded from the profits.

So Valfar...is the quality there? I would love to have a Mirage and Wheeljack. Silent Bob you have THE best tastes when it comes to TFormers...I need to pick up that Takara version of Hot Rod. Thanks for the pics man!

So far, Mirage,Sunstreaker,Grimlock,Shockwave and Bumblebee all are perfect to me, tight joints and paint is great on all of these will no slop that i could see. My Optimus Prime had paint chips on the feet so, i returned him and got a new cab and this new one is fine.Red Alert's paint on the roof of the car rubbed away a little but, it was on the side where you apply the rub sticker so, not really any issue there.
I hear Swoop is pretty flimsy in some areas and Slag seems to have a crappy paint job most of the time but, i guess you just take a chance when buying. My seller said most of his customers buy these for the box but, they really are nice counterfeit toys, not going to say Knock Off because KO's are usually really ____ty quality.

I'll definitely be picking up more of these, maybe Sludge and Swoop,Superion,Devastator,Springer,Cliffjumper,on the fence about WheelJack since he has no face lol. These versions of classic TF's really bring you back when opening them up, they come with the same instructions and clear red decoder, just in some cases you have to apply some stickers that were normally factory applied back in the 80's.

I'm ok with them not turning into the same things as their G! counterparts, as long as their Bot mode atleast somewhat reflects the G1 design.
Universe/Henki prime is an excelent example
Classics Bumblebee
Classics Hound
The new Wheeljack, Jazz, Wrek-gar, the entire WFC line, ETC.

I'm mre concerned with how well articulated the Bot modes are, than what their alt modes are.

though, I'd be VERY pleased with a Masterpiece Soundwave who still became a tapedeck. :D

as far as buying the G! knockoffs go, No thankyou. The original toys, while cool for their time, are EXTREMELY dated, unarticulated toys.

I want super poseable ones damnit.

It should go without saying that my Revoltech TFers are among my favorite ones.

I am more nostalgic for the cartoon than the old toys, so I'm very happy with a good chunk of the updated Classics, Alternators, and MP figures that look like souped up versions of the original toys (often how the toys should have looked, IMO). But when you make the robots turn into completely different things, it turns me off personally. Just like I have no use for non-transforming TFs, I don't need Optimus Prime that turns into a boat, etc.

Here's an idea, instead of a cassette player, how about Soundwave Turing into a listening device, or a mobile command center military vehicle, or, like in the new show a UAV?

masterpiece soundwave!! ummmmmmm never thought of that! hopefully soon we get it! cos obviously MP's being g1,it would have to turn into the ghetto blaster/tape deck! could u imagine it with fully articulated/transforming rumble/ravage! when it comes to the masterpiece line takara have not let us down giving us great MP's so far of the main characters so apart from galvatron, soundwave should be the next one! the last 2 new molds grimlock and hotrod are obviously autobots so a decepticon is due next me thinks!! come on takara! and please alter MP hotrods face sculpt as it doesnt look much like the cartoon version on which its based-face/jaw is toooooo long and human looking, and his 'helmet' shouldnt look like a 'helmet' its far too rounded!! his facesculpt doesnt have the squared cheek bones and jawline like the cartoon version! he looks to human imo.
