I've always figured that's why it's there. I don't see any other reason for having a scene of Luke getting his face rearranged by a monster.

Yep, that's why they started ESB with that scene. I remember hearing/reading about that issue prior to ESB and Lucas or maybe Hammill mentioned that the opening will address the change... thus, the Wampa strike.

I'd always heard that story about the Wampa attack too, but there are a lot of other reasons for the scene - it shows Luke's first encounter with actually seeing the ghost of Obi-wan, it shows how he's advanced in using the Force, it demonstrates that Han and Luke have become almost brothers that they're willing to die for each other. And it's a good reason to show yet another cool creature (well, cooler in the SE).

Going back to Luke, I really think this is one sculpt where I don't want to see any tweaking to the prototype. Even the slightest change ruins it for me; as I look at it I can only see what is for me the perfect Luke. Which is odd, seeing as I felt so strongly about Jedi Luke and he's my favorite version of the character. I'm not even sure why this sculpt speaks to me so strongly; it's just such a powerful feeling that this sculpt is right--I can't explain it. Even more than Old Ben. Am I nuts? Am I crazy? Maybe. But I haven't been this . . . moved by a figure since I can remember. I wish I knew why.

Must be that time of the month !

I agree with you entirely, This is the best luke sculpt i've ever seen - no tweaks needed, The thing that worries me are the production versions paint app's, But from what i've seen in pictures Old Ben looks to have the best paint yet, If he's the new benchmark then Luke & Smuggler Han should look almost as good as the prototypes.
The one thing that screws the figure up for me is the neck joint - it's hideous, on all previous figures it can be hidden & on a character with an open neck shirt it detracts from the "realistic" sculpt/clothes/accessories, Enterbay style torso Anyone ?

The Torso on the Enterbay figures would be great but I couldnt justify paying the same amount for the torso as I did for Luke himself.

There will be other methods just as cheap and getting the same effect Im guessing

Hopefully they will come up on these boards !

On a side note (dunno if someone's mentioned this before), but I always wondered if the Wampa scene in EMPIRE was written in to sort of explain Luke's slightly different look.

I've wondered that myself in recent years, though when I originally saw Empire as a kid I didn't really notice it that much - I just put it down to natural ageing. Carrie Fisher changes pretty dramatically over the course of the trilogy too.

Oddly enough though if you listen to the commentary on ESB Lucas says that's not why the scene was in the movie. That man contradicts himself more than most political figures.

Fisher didn't have to do drugs, not saying she didn't but look at Ford through the trilogy, he aged quite a bit by Jedi.

I think it's fairly accepted (although I'd be happy to listen to someone who's read/heard differently) that Carrie Fisher fell into drug (and overindulgence in alcohol) use after ANH and through until ROTJ.

Like any young woman abusing those would start to take their toll on anyone physically.

In terms of Ford I just think that for ROTJ he seemed almost out of shape--or is it just me?

I don't keep up on Fisher other than direct SW related info so I've never heard anything about drugs.

As for Ford, I actually found Han Chubbo in ESB to be a low point for Ford and he seemed more in shape like ANH in Jedi, just showing signs of age in the face a bit.

I believe that Fisher wrote about her experiences in her semi-biographical fiction/fact Postcards From The Edge... among other musings.

Well, as I said, it may have been Hammill that made that comment about the need for the Wampa attack up front, but I remember the story well. I remember the accident after "Corvette Summer" and everyone wondering if Mark was going to be replaced in ESB, thus the story. However, Lucas is well known for contradicting himself and seems to have a very fuzzy memory at times. The Wampa served many purposes, but I think it's clear the concept had everything to do with explaining Luke's new face.

I never pay attention to what Lucas says. I've seen enough of his interviews to know that his recollections are constantly changing.

If this is your favorite version of luke can i get an amen?I know ESB luke is mostly the top fave from the movies and such,But for those of us that love this ignorant and naive luke the best let me know.......Seriously.
