I'm also from the South and unfortunately, at least in my parents generation, there is still prejudice more there than anywhere else I've lived. Was the girl white, I didn't see that in the article?

altho i think it eventually came out that the guy wasn't quite as innocent as he'd made out, it was still a matter or the punishment being waaay to much for the crime.
