Anyone who has not seen the original is missing out on a great movie. Even Macaulay Culkin does well in this movie. The final scene...

When Gabe wins and takes Jacob to heaven

hits me as hard as any scene in any movie I have ever watched.

A remake is a field day in futility.

That being said, I liked the original so much that I will likely see the remake out of curiosity if nothing else.

If I ran the studio that made the original...I would get back in theaters now.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If the studios must remake films instead of coming up with something original(how ridiculous!), STOP choosing films that were(and still are) perfectly fine, and instead remake films that were crapola from the get-go.

the studios are out to make money, not good films.
They like to ride the "already-built-in" promotion that comes from remakes. There's a portion of the public already familiar with the original which will jumpstart word of mouth. As an example, odds are there would be no thread here about it if it was an original movie.

If original thought-provoking movies brought in ticket sales like remakes do, they would do more of them. When it comes down to it, movie-goers are as much to blame for the remakes as the studios. All they care about is ticket sales.

This movie needs no remake what-so-ever.... :monkey1

I swear I just read this after my post above :lol

Well, according to movie-making auteur David Lynch, the current situation in Hollywood is pretty “depressing”.

Perhaps this explains why we haven’t seen a new major film from Lynch since 2006’s Inland Empire? Or perhaps no one will finance any ideas he does have? Lynch recently caught up with The Independent to give his opinion on the state of the movie industry. He explained:

"It’s a very depressing picture. With alternative cinema any sort of cinema that isn’t mainstream you’re fresh out of luck in terms of getting theater space and having people come to see it. Even if I had a big idea, the world is different now. Unfortunately, my ideas are not what you’d call commercial, and money really drives the boat these days. So I don’t know what my future is. I don’t have a clue what I’m going to be able to do in the world of cinema.
Well, he’s probably not wrong. Money does make the world go round, and it’s exactly the same for the movie industry. Why do you think we’re getting so many remakes and reboots? It’s because studios can use the already present brand recognition to give their movies a boost and make marketing easier. But having said that, the market responds to demand. If more people paid to see indie movies, there would be more demand for their production. Perhaps the truth of the matter is that simply too few people pay to see movies which lack big budget appeal."

What do you think? Is Lynch right, or are these still great times for cinema? Let us know below.
