My better half just started ours last night. She has the degree so she gets the fun of doing them. Luckily we don't have state tax here so its not that bad to file just the federal.

I get our business taxes all ready and then have our CPA go over them, that way it only costs around $80 to have them done.

I do my personal income tax myself.

Got my Federal refund, still waiting for the state (NY).

Then of course, my wife will probably get laid off (Teacher).

I love NY. Just not really.

These states are going nuts! They're going to put 60 kids per classroom in Detroit. It's bad enough trying to teach those inner city kids there. Can you imagine 60 in one class? And now the big thing is calling teachers overpaid. You couldn't pay me enough to teach in the inner cities.

Hopefully your wife will be okay. Honestly, I'm worried here in Ohio. :(

thanks Ween, are you a teacher as well?

Yeah, it seems like this new Governor (Cuomo) we have is going after the teachers union too.

With the way things are going, I'm wondering if I should maybe consider another career path besides teaching. It kind of bums me out.

*steps onto soapbox*

Get rid of the teachers union and make pay incentive based.

*steps back down*

Got my state return direct deposit today and filed 2 weeks ago in GA. No federal yet.

Unions in general are getting a bad rap because of the economy. Gotta blame someone I guess.

Trouble this you suggestion that it opens it wide open for abuse. Piss off the administration for whatever reason and you're gone. You may be a great teacher, but if they want to get rid of you to get younger, lower paid ones in, they can do it. Are there bad teachers? Yes, just like every other profession but the majority of teachers are well worth their pay.

I'm a teacher's aide. Years ago I thought about going for the degree, but I know if I were a teacher I wouldn't last long because I'm too old school in my thinking and dealing with the parents is bad enough as it is for me. I'd probably be fired in no time. :lol

And yes, despite what you see on TV, teachers do get fired.

I was wondering how everyone's city taxes work. I have NEVER gotten any city taxes back on my return, no matter how much I made. It's almost like a flat tax here. Cut and dry.

then why would it be too much?

Because I received a SUBSTANTIALLY greater amount than previous years..... And I'm not sure how that is..... :dunno

I'm a student working part time. I answered everything on turbo tax honestly. Thing is, I have student loans that are in deferrment right now since I'm still in school. I received a form from my school stating the tuition and grant info. I noticed when I entered that info the return amount jumped up.

Any other students in CA notice this?

I don't live in CA but when I was a student I barely got anything back on my taxes. I didn't work much but I still got almost nothing.

Maybe the tax laws changed.

Yes, because then your non-refundable (which lower your tax liability) and your refundable (money in your pocket) credits kick in; form 8863.

Nope because we aren't getting one. Had to pay. Grrr argh. Though, we were expecting that and expecting to pay double so it's a relief I guess.

Well, looks like the bill is going to pass in Ohio. I won't go into it because I don't want to go political, but I would definately not come to Ohio to be a teacher now. If they get their way, the average teacher's pay here will be $32,000 a year and the benefits will suck.

I can imagine what my pay is going to be. I'll be quitting if I get a pay cut. After taxes, insurance and pension, I make about $9 an hour now. :monkey4
