The Golf is cool, but I think only 2 door. We need 4 door incase we have kids, plus I drive a Celica and its a hassle not being able to drive anyone around in either of our cars. So must have a 4 door.

Also, VW is out of our price range. We're looking at $20k max.

We do look at used when on the lot, but my wife has been a good wench so she deserves a brand new vehicle for the first time in her life.

My wife has a Kia Rio... its a little cheap-o car with no balls, but she's had it since '03, put around 80,000 miles on it with no major issues past regular maintenance. Also it has that 100,000/10 Year warranty (not sure if they still do that) which is a pretty cool thing.

So while not the most awesome vehicle its damn reliable, gets great gas mileage and is nondesrcript enough to fit into a crowd :lol

If you can push it to $21-22k, I would recommend the entry level Subaru Outback. One of the safest cars on the road (=cheap cheap insurance), great gas mileage (22/29) and AWD for those wintery roads.

I know sticker is $23k, but these are selling just above dealer cost with great financing specials (1.9%). We picked up a 3.6R last fall for $260 over dealer cost with 1.9% for 60mos.

Use www.truecar.com to get dealer pricing and such. It also shows what others are paying, but this seems to be much higher than what I got through internet pricing.

wouldn't buy a kia . . . . ever

I have just close to half a dozen people that i know who have bought them brand new, and have had major repair issues with them very quickly. On of my buddy's bought a brand new rio in 06, an it needed a new transmission less than eight months later, no joking guys. That is scary. They are cheap for a reason.

i think earlier they were not as good. but they are scoring a lot higher the past several years. but you're right you don't get something for nothing.

Check out the Honda Fit......My ex has one and it's a great little car with lots of room.....

Yea my girlfriend won't buy any compact except civics. There is really no comparison there: they are the best. She just bought another brand new one for $16K out the door after taxes, licensees, everything. Dealers near us are hurting for business cuz of the economy so that worked in our favor. Everyone has different personal experiences, so no matter who you talk to you will get a different story for the most part.

I bought a Ford Fusion last year, it can be within your price range. It is a great mid-sized sedan. I got one with all of the bells and whistles but even their lower end models are solid. The build quality is great and handles and runs pretty smooth ans as others mention, sync rocks!
