Are prices getting out of control?

I too have passed on several releases due to the increasing prices. I understand they need to increase etc but it the jump are huge and seem to be the new norm. Toss in the retail store that wants a higher margin only to increase yet again. When I see this I remove them from my favorites and make sure I don't do business with them again.

I was debating if to get the ANH vader january last year but ended up getting SS stormy ended up costing £40 brand soanking new :) i think SS vaders were going for about $119 on ebay there was nowhere in UK selling them not even on UK ebay the prices people are asking for vader now is beyond belief theres one on ebay now for about $560 it looks like SS are gonna be doing the ROTJ vader in the not so distant future so im gonna wait out for that im not paying a weeks wages for 1 figure lol

I collect mainly Hot Toys figures (I counted yesterday and I have 43) and the price has gotten past $200 a fig, that is getting too rich for my blood. The problem is we all still buy the stuff telling Hasbro, Hot Toys etc... that the price is fine and just keep charging more. I love these figures but the prices will end up driving me away from this hobby. I think a lot of it is greed, but when you charge too much (the HT Terminator 1 T-800 figure) and it's not even as good as the previous Terminator release but you are charging $30 more, its enough for people to say I really dont need that figure.

I pretty much fully agree. I started with 6 inch figures, watchig vids from guys like JTMitchell on youtube and have now moved up to hot toys over the last year and a half. At first the bug to get alot of stuff was high and long story short I spent an INSANE amount of money on mostly predators. I now have 23 Hot Toys, 8 of which are preds, and honestly I'm shocked at how quickly the money went away. I don't really regret buying what I have as I only bought what I really like (which sucks because I have nothing to sell), but still I'm shocked when I calculate what I spent. And the new list prices for the popular licenses are kissing 200+ now. Thankfully this year very little is coming out I'm interested in. Honestly I think I'm going to cut out Hot Toys for a while. Too damn much money gone to damn fast.

Im a new HT collector and Ive been suffering to get some of the old figures. I only have 6 figures and i have spent the equivalent to 10 or more. Im very exigent on my choices but being late to the hobbie is costing me a lot and it seems every new release is getting more expensive than the later. With those prices I think i will buy around 3 or 4 figures per year.

I pretty much stopped buying collectibles the past two years. I just recently started buying again and I've purchased more customs than anything. It's just getting too expensive and the quality hasn't improved enough to justify the cost.

I don't think prices are that bad, depending on the release. HT's Spider-Man is a measly $134 which is below their average of $150-$180 (and it's been that for some time now). However, using the same company, when you look at the DX Indy for $250 and compare him to Ghost Rider who's also $250 but comes with a motorcycle, it's a bit absurd.

I think prices should be lower now. I mean, how many people are collecting anymore [besides us]? Most are struggling just to get food. Plus before my promotion at work, I make a little more than minimum wage. It takes me a little while to come together with any money for collectibles that are priced higher than $60.

That's not how it works though. With less people ordering collectibles, companies are forced to produce less. They're also forced to increase prices as buying more makes per-unit prices lower, but buying in smaller quantities costs more. With production costing more, naturally the price has to increase. This is all then dumped on the lap of the consumer. We've not only seen this a bit with HT, but also with the kiddie companies like McFarlane and NECA whose prices have also increased despite the bad economy.

The only alternative is to cut quality and cut corners in production to cut cost and then at the end you're stuck with a cheap WalMart knockoff. I, for one, am glad this wasn't the route taken.

Good points Nam. I've been definately seeing quality issues with some of the latest HT I got. War Machine and Mark IV. Havn't really noticed a major decline in other compaines in my personal experience, but then I only have a couple NECA figures, and I've never ordered a sideshow statue. Lets face it they are all cheap plastic crap. Minus a few of course.

So higher gas/oil prices and a de-valued currency(US Dollar) has nothing to do with it then.....YES..expect prices to go higher..

That does as well. Quite a bit. I'm just saying he made a couple points that made sense. Don't get me started on politics.

TERRORISM!

I'm not sure how so many of you can afford dozens upon dozens of Hot Toys models. I mean, unless majority of you have a high paying job/career to accomodate your lifestyle...

OT kinda: In my opinion, I think McF and Neca do a fine job. You don't have to have fancy accesories and real clothing to be cool...I mean, for 7" figures what else is there? Especially since they are so affordable. I love Sideshow and just got my first HT figure [and it is amazing] but I feel having fewer of them in just my favorite characters makes them all the more special...and I can collect numerous amounts of McF and Neca without breaking the bank.

A lot of people probably don't buy as much as it might sometimes seem. To me, often it feels like people are buying two a month or something and then you see their collection or hear from them and they really only own just 30 - 40 HT figures after collecting for years.

Others, who buy a lot, sometimes live with their parents, so they don't have rent and such concerns, and also go into debt... I can think of a couple of examples on here who have posted about that being the case with them. Buying/owning a lot of figures then doesn't necessarily mean the person is on Easy Street, living well...

Afford is a relative term. I've noticed a fair share of "I've got an unexpected bill to pay, so I need to sell so and so figures" situations, so I'm guessing there are more than a few folks out there that can "afford" what they're buying, but are probably spending more than they should.

I have been collecting for years and I have changed my taste several times, which always means selling off the stuff I am bored with to get the new figure, and I spend a lot of money too, my wife gets pissed sometimes. I always remind her that I have sold figures to help emergency car repair or house repair. Collecting these figures is very addicting, but unlike drugs or gambling, I have sweet ass figures to show for my money. :panic::panic::panic:
