Different sort of story here:

I'm a soldier in Afghanistan, been here for almost a year now- just under three more months to go. Anyway, I love to read, most especially science-fiction. On the side, when I'm not soldiering, I do 3D modeling (Trek ships mostly) and have always had a deep appreciation for art in general.

So, a few months back, I bought a Kindle on which to read my favorite books. Very handy device, the Kindle. Small, lightweight and it's true when they say that, when you use it, you forget that you aren't reading from a real book. When you turn the Kindle off the screen does not go blank. Amazon, in their infinite wisdom and to celebrate the great literary masters of our past, have portraits that come up on the electronic paper as pseudo-screensavers. Some of them are very tastefully done, but it's really rather bland to look at.

I recently learned of a way to "hack" my Kindle so that I can change the screensaver images to whatever I like. Being a soldier and having a penchant for classic ideals, I decided that pin-up images would be a great replacement for the likes of John Steinbeck, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Mark Twain.

This whole thread and the many incredible contributions to it have enabled me to fill my Kindle with enough pin-up style art as to make me the envy of every soldier in my battalion. So, I thank you all and the artists whom you celebrate for giving me something a little more interesting to look at when I open my Kindle and start to immerse myself into the worlds created by Heinlein, Asimov, Robinson, Gibson and the rest of their august ilk. Many, many thanks indeed!

And even though I've got upwards of 125 images ported over to my Kindle, I'm perfectly happy in saying this: more wouldn't hurt.

Thanks again, folks!

Nightshadow,

I'm happy to have a small part in giving you some sense of normalcy and happiness during your tour. You will have no problem filling up your kindle with the awesome artwork that not only myself, but my many friends in this thread post! We will do our best in keeping you the envy of your battalion! :)

Stay positive and thank you helping to protect and serving our great country!
