As a seller, is there any point in insuring collectibles anymore?

For items over $50.00 I insure them...
UPS has insurance built into their pricing.
USPS you pay and must show proof of value.
i.e. does not do you any good to over value an item.
Fedex also has insurance built in.
Remember whatever you do. If the item is expensive then use tracking and signature confirmation.
It may cost you but it beats being told they never received the item.
Paypal readily sides with the buyer and you must have the paper trail to defend yourself, Also reserve the right to cancel bids on buyers who have negative comments relevant to receiving items missing or broken. It does happen but this should send up a red flag.

Well tracking would be a given. As for insurance, well that'd mean declaring the maximum insurable amount and likely create a big customs bill for the buyer upon receipt of the figure. I'm thinking that could piss him off.

Not only a no but a hell no. And a ROFLcopter. OK thanks.

I pay my local "mail and beyond" a nearby package center to wrap it for me, with a brand new mailing package along with double boxing the statue.
Then they put insurance on it for me and send it.

This way I Pay a little more but in case any issues I get full money back. I have %100 rating and over 10 yrs of feedback all issues have been resolved very easy. I always take pictures during the package process too

I don't send overseas if I can help it as there is a huge risk they will get damaged

Sorry I am not going to not protect myself to safe the buyer money. Want me to send at a lower customs value pay me as a gift.

I considered that but asking for payment as Gift seems to be frowned upon. Plus is it even a guarantee of safety for an honest seller?

Sorry to the OP for hijacking this thread by the way.

I should show the my retailer this, I have bought 20+ statues from him and I got about 4 statue come broken , and he refuse sell to me and refund me all my deposit , cause he said he can't afford to pay the shipping! Things will come broken, all those driver are crazy, they drop box hard doesn't give damn. I also sold many stuff already, all the item I sold will be insure, that is the way to protect myself. But don't use USPS, they don't pay you back like ups or FedEx!!
Btw do not buy from that eBay seller if you think your statue will come perfectly fine, cause they don't like to get replacement to you!!( retailer: secretcompass)

One thing that bugs me and that you can't fully protect yourself against is Sideshow's packaging for statues. Unless you put their massive boxes inside even more massive boxes with padding inside (often not feasible), then you have to rely on Sideshow's styrofoam packaging plus maybe a little extra help here or there and hope it does the trick. But sometimes that's not enough to ensure that a piece won't get damaged in transit. And of course, a package can be dinged without damaging box, but the USPS insurance policy is what it is. I'm always fearful shipping statues out for this purpose, and that's a reason I often hold off on selling them.

I feel the same way about statues. My ninja turtles and most of my Marvel PFs would be gone if I wasn't so nervouse about shipping statues.

Would any of you guys sell to a total unknown on the forum with no feedback and hardly any posts - who came out of nowhere offering you a substantial sum for a figure you weren't otherwise even considering selling?

I've had something sort of similar happen to me recently. A guy with 1 post that's been a member for about a year wanted to buy something I have for sale from me and offered to pay right away. He asked me to send him a paypal payment request and I haven't heard from him since. It makes me a little nervous like he wanted my email address or something. I'm sure it's nothing, but I'm paranoid about that kind of stuff.

As long as its a confirmed account I am pretty sure they have little recourse.

No. :nono

Never had a single issue with an insurance claim, be it ups, USPS, FedEx.

Same here. I always insure to protect mine and my buyer's investment.

IMO, it's a small price to pay for doing business on the internet.

I sold off all of my TMNT statues (both Playmates and Sideshow) earlier this year, and didn't have a single problem. They are very secure in the boxes to begin with, and I packed each one very securely in a larger box.

As nice as the Sideshow shippers are, they aren't secure enough for me. I always pack a statue in a bigger roomier box, and fill it with packing peanuts. That way, if the package is dropped, the impact won't affect the interior box containing the statue. I've never had a statue damaged in shipping.

wow, I had no idea, I guess I won't use SC for buying statues anymore. That's kind of odd though cause replacements should be coming from SSC, not SC.

I have about 4 PFs I want to get rid of, but I'm too nervous too.

I'd rather not having something that cost hundreds of dollars sitting on my shelves if I don't like it anymore. I keep getting mixed messages from ebay about who is responsible for a damaged piece during transit. Does anyone know how difficult it is to deal with UPS for something damaged during transit?

yea, I shipped a ton of SS pieces in my time. This one incident was the first time a piece got there damaged. Of course, for all I know, the buyer broke it while taking it out of the box. Selling is a huge drag, but I just don't like to have a huge collection, and thankfully, with price increases, open ES pieces and bad paint apps, it's not as difficult to restrain myself

Western union seems to be the number one money transfer for scams.

I was aware of that reputation however after reading about it - seems like the victims of these scams are always buyers, not sellers. I could find no case where the seller managed to get scammed.

All my sales have always arrived safe! :yess:

I'm talking about Thor's PF feathers, Cap PF wings and Wolverine commiquette blades here. :thud:

I grew hair after packing those 3.

Had it happen to me selling waaaaaaay back in ebaY's stone age days. Buyer used a stolen debit card to send payment. I got contacted by WU and had to return the money, leaving me out the item. Food for thought.

Yeah, that Cap PF status I shipped to you awhile back that got damaged in transit has fed into my fears. When the first one I ordered got shipped to me the wing got dinged up in shipment.
