Asian Cinema? Now you got me going:
You can never go wrong with Akira Kurosawa, Narayama Bushiko, or Takeshi Kitano to name some famous (Japanese) directors. Don't forget Wong Kar Wai, Ang Lee, ...
It's tricky to name favorites, it's guaranteed I'll forget half of them:

Tetsuo (the Iron Man) by Shinya Tsukamoto
Tetsuo II: Body Hammer

The Ballad of Narayama by Shohei Imamura

Natural City by Byung-chun Min (pretty Blade Runner-ish)

Zatoichi by Takeshi Kitano

It's hard to favor one of Kurosawa's films, simply to good.

Wong Kar Wai, what to choose? In the mood for love? 2046?

Hero by Zhang Yimou (although the visuals are more impressive than the story line. Same can be said of 'House of the Flying Daggers.)

Nobody knows by Kore-Eda Hirokazu.

If you like gore, try Lam Ngai Kai's Riki-Oh and Ichi the Killer by Takashi Miike.

There is so much good Asian Cinema out there, and there's also all the good Anime to take into consideration!

Very nice list! Some I like vigorously, others I still have to discover!

if you want to watch something crazy, pretty much any film by Takashi Miike or Takeshi Kitano is a good watch.

My favorite from Miike is Visitor Q, Gozu

Also, worth watching is 3 Extremes. One short film by Miike is on it.

If you want to see a good warm-heathy feeling film, I suggest watching:

Kikujiro (hope I spelled that right) I love this film

I'm glad somebody mentioned Takeshi Kitano. Takeshi is my favorite effin' director of all time. For those unfamiliar with TK, check out these films.

Dolls - Art. This is how love stories should be presented. No corny, happy Hollywood bull****. Beautiful.
Hana-bi - Yakuza.
Sonatine - Yakuza.
Kikujiro - Lighthearted comedy/drama.
Kids Return - Boxing. Yakuza.
Zatoichi - Samurai. Blood.
Brother - Yakuza.

For non-Takeshi-directed films, check these effers out.

Survive Style 5+ - This tops my recommendation list. Beautiful visuals. Great humor. Stylish, yet obscure film. Rated R. Yay.
Oldboy - Vengeance.
Audition - Disgusting. Yummy.
A Tale of Two Sisters - More of a ghost story than a horror film. Well done in any case.
Battle Royale - Decent. Takeshi Kitano as the villain saves the film.

That's a great list, especially the choice of Audition. One of sickest movies I've seen and head over heels better than most of the American horror crap and Saw retreads put out nowadays.

Has anyone seen 2046? Great film, and so was it's predecessor, In the Mood For Love.

i've seen In the Mood for love.

Really good film.

Also, another suggestion is Happy Together and Tae Guk Gi

Also, The Returner and Princess Blade

I fell asleep in Departed; but enjoyed Infernal Affairs much more. I never finished The Departed....

I am a big fan of Asian cinema.
I have quite a few asian dvds in my collection and i love most ive seen (couple have been pants).

I love that asian films tho sometimes dont have a major budget like american films they still manage to pull off a mind blowing film.
I prefur subtitles when watching and every now and than i find a film that has a direct translation (this is hard for me to explain but i mean when asian is converted to english for there words/meaning in asian) to english via subs.. if any 1 has seen one of these films there a nightmare and u will know what im talking about to give u a prime exsample "devilman" its hard to keep up with whats being said because of the direct translation but still its a good film lol.

Im not a fan of american remakes of asian films like the gruge, ring, pluse dark water..

Few films in my collection are.

Hero -Ultimate edition
Brother
purple storm
dark water
The gruge
Story of ricky AKA riki - oh
Battle royal 1/2
Legend of the red dragon
Casshern
H
Fearless
The returner
Shiri
Kid from shaolin
Ichi the killer
Devilman
Dragon tiger gate
Gen-x-cops
Seven swords
House of flying daggers
Initial D
Ong-Bak
Warrior king
Arahan
Unbeaten 28
New police story
A man called hero
The storm riders
The duel

Has anyone seen The Machine Girl? It's a Japanese movie about a girl with a machine gun for an arm.

I watched it last night and I don't know what to say. The kitsch is turned onto "Maximum" for this movie.
