Well paid my invoice. I figure worse case if I don't like the Gollum in Person I can sell him and I still come out with Smeagol and the beautiful diorama base.
Just hoping that Gollum portrait looks better in person. Because I was planning to use him with my Hobbit Bilbo display. 🤞
Still haven't received my invoice, wonder when then next batch will be sent out?
I ordered the deluxe set in September 2021 and still waiting...

Smeagol / Gollum arrived today.

A VERY quick review:

Packaging was really nice. There is an outer shipper box with the plastic corner protectors.
Inside of that was another brown box but with the Asmus information on Gollum/Smeagol and stating Luxury Edition. (The ball cap was taped to this box.

Inside of that were three nice art boxes: One for Gollum, One for Smeagol and another for the pond diorama.

I decided to open up Smeagol first, just to see what the figure(s) look like. The first thing that struck me was indeed the "stinky" smell. :thud:
It is definitely from the material used on the body.

I think Asmus did a good job on the design of the figure, allowing one to have different poses without exposed ugly joints (for the most part).

I was able to easily remove the two "straight" legs in order to replace them with the bent-knee posed legs. Unfortunately, I gave up after several minutes. I just couldn't get the legs to snap onto the ball joints. I'll try again later after heating up the pegs. My only concerns are that I may damage the rubber skin and that I will release even more of the stinky smell...

The head sculpt looks great but as mentioned before, once you connect it to the neck, at least one of the eye pegs are going to be moved and he'll look a little cross-eyed...

Just going by Smeagol, I think Asmus did an all around good job on the Smeagol/Gollum figure(s). I'll be really happy once I can get those darn legs connected...

Got my set today, too! Overall, very pleased!

(Had the same issue with the leg swap, but just dunk the socket ends of the bent legs into a cup of hot water (not boiling) for ten of fifteen seconds and they should pop right on. I just used hot water from the tap and it worked just fine. Didn't even have to heat it up on the stove or microwave.)

I am going to darken the hair, though. Still puzzled by why they went with white hair instead of gray.

Paint looks much better in hand than some of the early pics. Very solid set overall. Is it perfect? No, but I think they did a very nice job solving a lot of the engineering challenges that the character design presents.

I think both portraits are quite good. The eye articulation is problematic for both heads, but I'm not sure I'm brave enough to dig out that internal piece that was mentioned above to allow for better movement. (I didn't have a ton of issues having the position of the eyes knocked out of whack by the neck posts, but I may have just been lucky with my initial poses.)

The paint work could maybe a use a bit more texturing and "dirt," but it's better in hand than pictures make it look.

The articulation was always going to be a huge challenge for this figure, but I think they've done a decent enough job of solving some of the issues with the swap-out legs. Would I love an uber-flexible Gollum with ball and socket joints everywhere that can get into all the extreme crouchy/crawly poses that character gets into ... while also NOT seeing joints everywhere? Of course I would. But those two things can't really coexist. In the end, I appreciate that they're trying to strike a balance here and I respect the effort. This would be a really hard character for any company to pull off.

As for accessories, he's pretty light. Each figure comes with the One Ring, a fish, a pair of bent legs, the eye-adjusting tool, two magnetic neck plugs (for upright or all-fours head angles), and a half dozen gesturing/gripping hands. I would have liked maybe a few bent feet, a few extra wrist pegs (since these seem unique to this figure and you only get the two that come pre-installed in the figure), and maybe a few additional hands with more gestures.

As for the rock dirama piece, it's great. They could have gone with a plain rock, but they've gone the extra mile and included a little patch of clear resin to make it look like water, and a swimming fish beneath the surface. Classy and clever. (My only gripe is that the fish/water part is on the side that will end up being the back of the rock in a most people's displays, so it will end up being hidden. Grr.)

Oh, and the baseball cap is maybe my favorite part of this set. Just because it's such a goofy, hilarious, completely nonsensical addition. :lol Thank you for that, Asmus!

Just my two cents ...

EDIT: Oh, and the packaging is pretty great. I really appreciate the ultra-slim boxes for each figure. And the mat/glossy designs on the fronts of their boxes are really classy.

Those that ordered Gollum/Smeagol through Asmus did you guys get the Gandalf hat? I remember them saying that Bilbo and Gollum would be ones they included the Gandalf hat with people's orders. Curious if that was honored or not.

No Gandalf hat with my set. (I got one with Old BIlbo.) Did GtW come with it? (I'll be getting my GtW in a week or so.)

I wonder if they'd include one with an order if requested.

The hot water trick worked perfectly for attaching the legs.

As for the eyes, when attaching the head sculpt, the neck would hit one of the eye stalks and slightly move one of the eyes. I had to fiddle with it, setting the eye in a certain position until inserting the head would move the eye to the correct spot. This is really the only nagging issue with this figure. I did notice that one foot was a little looser than the other, possibly affecting his balance. I ended up using his right arm as a third point of contact in order to balance him safer.

Once I got him set up and posed, he really won me over. I will look into darkening the hair strands so that they are more accurate and stand out a little better. Also thinking about some slight weathering but not really a must-do.

While it may appear as a simple figure, I do appreciate the overall design by Asmus.

Here are a pair of photos of my Smeagol. I still have Gollum to set up as well as the diorama.

hair colour can be changed by wetting some ash or charcoal.
Dip the tips of your fingers in the mixture and drag the hair strands
through your pinched fingers.
If you get it on the figure it will wash right off (unlike ink or dye).

I still really wish that the rock diorama would be available with Gollum or Sméagol separately or just on its own.

I don’t feel a need to own both of them but would like the rock to perch whichever version I get onto.

Me too. I've only ordered the Smeagol version, but would have liked the option on buying the rock diorama as well.

"Whats is it my precious?! What's ISSS IT??"
Surprise delivery came today for my Asmus Collectibles Gollum/Smeagol Luxury Edition! Aside from a few issues I think Asmus has dome a really wonderful set here. I'll break my review up again into CONS and PROS. What I like and think works well versus what I don't like and think they could have done something different.

CONS: First and foremost I want to address the hideous seem in the backs of each head. Im.not sure why they chose this, unless they had plans to have that part removable to access the joysticks to move the eyes. Aside from that it looks a bit distracting.

The hair asmus went with is a bit too light in my opinion for Gollum. I think it should be a darker gray or even black. Not White/silver.

The device inside the head and the eye joy sticks hinder the range of motion to get deep setting eye movement to the sides so word of advice do what I have done and remove those pieces and clip down the joy sticks so you can get the more dynamic eye poses I have shown in the video. Without doing so you'll get some pretty vanilla eye movement. I'll post pics of the pieces on my Instagram to show what I actually mean.

Swapping the legs from the straight to the crouching is extremely difficult unless you use hot water to warm up the crouching leg pieces.

Playing around with the pose and getting tye legs on it didn't take long before I noticed paint rubbing off the rubber body. So that's annoying. I can also had more dirt or grime in those areas but that shouldn't be an issue. So points docked there...

PROS: Asmus has done an extremely great job engineering this body and I'm happy to say it works. The crouching legs was a smart move so as to not having the normal legs get damaged over time from being in a crouched pose.
Both portraits ended up wowing me more than I thought they would. I thought I'd just be keeping the Smeagol version, but now I'm happy to say I'm pleased with both. Aside from the eyes needed that mod of course.
The Rock diorama is gorgeous and I love the clear resin for the "pool" and the visible fish. It's a nice touch.
The articulation is extremely nice as well. Just be careful while posing to try and avoid any further paint rub etc.

Overall I think Asmus did an excellent job here. There were hurdles and they were over come. And even though InArt is giving us some amazing figures of some of the Human characters like Gandalf, Aragorn and Legolas, I'll say I think it's a safe bet we won't be seeing Gollum here by another company any time soon if ever. So props to Asmus team for delivering a pivotal character in the Tolkien franchise.
It would be really awesome, And I'm sure I'm not the only one that would be on board with this, for a character that is so animated with different expressions, is Asmus decided to offer an Expressions Expansion set with more facial expressions! I would totally be on board for something like that. Just shorten the eye joy sticks. They really don't need to be that long.
Asmus Gollum + Smeagol Luxury Edition I give an 8/10

Thanks for watching Precious!

I highly recommend removing this little piece in the head. Remove the eyes and clip the joy sticks a bit shorter. This will allow you to have my range of posing the eyes without the sticks hitting the sides of head. You can get a more dynamic side eyed pose this way.

Sometimes I wish I could have a 360° rotating display for poses like this.

ohhh AWESOME and honest review!!
Thankyou.
Your poses are very indicative of the character(s).
I especially love the sly look to the right Gollum is giving the ring.
I'll get this set soon.
