Nice pic Stephen Gentile! These two figures are awesome! :clap :rock What did you use for Bilbo's walking stick if you don't mind me asking - it looks great.

Thanks guys. For the staff, I used a simple wood dowel I had from a hobby store, cut it to length and used a light and dark brown marker to give it some wood grain. The Arkenstone was a bead I found somewhere. I'm always on the lookout for weird little objects that come in handy for 1/6th mods, a habit from my plastic model making days.

Thanks for that, that's very helpful! :duff Gonna go and check out Amazon later to see if I can find something similar. :)

Thorin.jpgThorin1.jpg Thorin finally showed up at the comic shop I ordered him from yesterday. I spent 30 minutes showing him to one of the workers there. She had never seen these figures before. The Orcirst strap is quite difficult to stay together but otherwise he is an amazing figure. And of course here are a couple of shots I took yesterday.

Wow, EXCELLENT pics! Thanks for posting - u have some skills!:clap:clap:clap

My second Bilbo and Thorin finally rolled in from SSC yesterday. Both superb - ASMUS has been really consistent :clap- except someone was too enthusiastic wrapping Thorin's head w. plastic - or it was a real hard trip from shipping.

Thorin's got some "sealed in box" hair. I've got Thorin #2 out getting some air for now. But just beautiful figs.:love

Thank you so much for the damn kind words. Why do you have two Bilbo's? And how is Bilbo? I started thinking aboot getting him since Thorin showed up.

LOL am probably not the best person to ask about Bilbo:cool: - IMO he's wonderful. Some have complained - at least from pics - the head seems too large and/or the hair bothers them.

In hand - I don't see a problem at price...tight joints, amazing to-scale clothes, amazing accessories - nice face paint. Maybe the face could be a bit softer in the cheeks but IMO still a great Martin Freeman sculpt. Suggest u check out Bilbo thread on the forum, and https://www.mwctoys.com/REVIEW-011419a.htm

*Some* figs I get two of, depending, since I don't turn my collections over. But I tend to target certain characters or themes, maybe. I'm not a complete-ist. Love the Hobbit movies (LOL just sort of ignore the stuff that gets on my nerves.) I think Martin Freeman and Richard Armitage (Bilbo and Thorin) were movie highlights - amazing performances/characters.

And I know it's pretty unlikely we'll see figures like this again:horror - or soon, anyway. There's WETA poly statues, and Iron Studios is going to have a 1/10 line. But far as I know these 1/6 LOTR and Hobbit figs are pretty unusual - for one thing, companies wanna target big sellers like Marvel and Star Wars. There's no current movie to hype interest in Middle Earth.

Finally, ASMUS just doesn't do huge production runs like HT. Learned the hard way w. Thranduil if u really want ASMUS fig, don't wait....Anyway to me, Bilbo's got more than one Hobbit movie look, so both he and a Thorin are planned for some mild custom/kitbashing (in time). I think a mithril shirt and oversized coat (DOS/BOFA look) is do-able for Bilbo, eventually. And it'll be interesting trying to pull together Thorin's BOFA look.:frank

PS. If I think a fig is BAD tho I don't duplicate, no matter who it is - just send the first one back. I think I only did that once, tho, and it wasn't an ASMUS fig.

Those are solid reasons. I have checked out MCW and the thread. And I am pretty much teetering no getting him because of Thorin. I also have seen some amazing shot of Bilbo too.
Yes Asmus has been knocking it out of the park lately with their releases. I doubt we will ever see these figures released by another company either.

So many Baggins!!!!! Ha.

Well, yeah. No pun intended here.:monkey3. There's a LOT of Bilbos in this forum...:monkey3

PS. Another reason to have duplicate figs is it can be kinda handy if there's a PROBLEM. My first defect w. ASMUS so will be e-mailing Sideshow and ASMUS. One of #2 Thorin's hands - the upper part of his ring is gone. Seems to have been packed that way - tiny piece is not in box and the hands fit tight in the tray. Someone got sloppy at the factory.:(

ASMUS_Thorin_fist_defect.jpg

Also his right ankle is a bit looser than I like. I might futz with that. Not real bad but I like TIGHT joints. That said, all of his other joints are great; great paint, #2 Bilbo is flawless.

A few Orcrist details:

LOL I may talk about kitbashing Bilbo and Thorin but not sure I have the *spine* to mess with such excellent figs.:love

#2s Thorin and Bilbo. Not that I'm rich:(. Used gift cards to pay off POs last summer. So I just had to pay off the shipping - at least SSC managed to ship, even w. all their recent website problems. Between Chinese New Year and Sideshow issues, who knows how fast I will hear about a replacement hand:dunno. Still, spent way too much time playing with these guys!:lol

Does everyone's have this big of a gap between the neck and the sculpt?[/IMG]

Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk

There's a gap on mine I guess, but nothing I really noticed. Is the head on yours pushed all the way down on the ball joint?

Yeah, that looks to me like it may not be fully seated in the socket. Have you tried some gentle pressure? Mine has a little gap, but so do a lot of my figures. Nothing that extreme.

Guys I want your opinion on the following:

I preordered Thorin on a well known retailer (his name will not be mentioned for the moment).
I received Bilbo instead, cause he made a mistake.
I negotiated with with him and kept Bilbo for a lower price, even if he wasn't much needed,
just to save the hassle for both of us.

I received Thorin yesterday with the following problems:

1) The edge of the metal blade (Orcrist) is broken
2) one of the straps on the oakenshiled is broken
3) one of the extra handpegs is broken
4) on the furcoat many strands on the back came fallen off
5 & 6) The base and the pole are both scratched

Should I contact him for replacements or Asmus directly?

Last I have some questions:

a) when using the oakenshield should I leave the wrist band (bracer) on or off?
b) he came with a pipe which was not mentioned in the items list,
is there another item that he should come with, even if it wasn't mentioned in the items list?
c) his hair especially the white strands are somewhat curly.
Is that normal and can be fixed or is it another problem?

Some of the things you mention would be "typical" of 1/6 scale figs. I don't mean that in a negative way. And I'm not an expert. Just at least for me, and sounds like for a lot of other folks u get a "repair kit" together real fast for 1/6 figs. E.g. have on hand: super glue, fabric glue (or white glue in a pinch), small sharp scissors, toothpicks and misc. other useful stuff like pointed tweezers. When re-gluing, let sit overnite no matter what package says; give time to fully cure (in my experience). Superglue for hard plastics; fabric glue for "soft" repairs "in general".

Since the places glue is used are so tiny, it's not unusual to have to reglue something. I already snapped the straps on one of my shields, pulling too hard, so that's a superglue repair. Scratching smooth surfaces being glued together is good - give the glue something to grip. I used nails, needle files, a knife, etc.

Your retailer is first point of contact - a good retailer will immediately exchange. Pain in &ss but usually u hafta exchange entire fig. Some retailers will also just ship new parts. If that's a fail, I would never buy from retailer again and contact ASMUS. Also get Paypal/credit card company involved as needed. Leave negative feedback re retailer everywhere. A charge back is something merchants hate as they are charged for that.

For me the big thing would be the broken peg and Orcrist, since that's unfixable:(. Pegs can be sourced, but Orcrist should be perfect.

The differences in fibers is OK. It's not unusual to have to mess w. rooted hair figs. If it bothers you, dampen hair slightly (stroke w. wet finger) and pick or comb until u get effect that you like. I used a bamboo skewer, but a nail or other will work as a hair pick too. Or old clean toothbrush. Personally I like the curling IMO gives a more "live effect"

The shedding coat is OK as long as the stitching is good. Some fibers dropping off are where the costume stitching/shape was clipped - it's kinda unavoidable when cutting fake fur or heavy napped fabrics. One of my Thorins had that too - left over fuzz. Just check stitching and u can use tape or brush to pick off loose fiber.

The scratches on the stand - if everything else was perfect, for me I would let it go, as in time there's likely to be scratches anyway on plastics. On the other hand, I'd look real hard and decide if this fig had been opened and then re-packed. Pretty sure my "new" Legolas had been on display or opend:mad:, but I got him from an Amazon retailer. I let it go, but after that decided to try to stick w. my usual retailers.

I put the Oakenshield on over the bracer - like the movie. Just go slow and don't tug too hard, that's how I pulled a strap off. Now I need to reglue.:slap

Besides the hands, Thorin should have dwarf sword Deathless, a strap for Orcrist, his pipe, Orcrist, scabbard, and the extra hands. I think the pipe was a pretty late addition as the fan community wanted it e.g. the AUJ song scene. I know I wanted it for this release, especially displaying Thorin without his cloak.

I am sorry you had issues:(. I still need to contact SSC about my Thorin defective hand, or ASMUS. Seems there's been a bit of production line/packaging line sloppiness here and there:(. Not unusual, but very irritating for customer. If this is a reputable retailer they should exchange or fix issue for you ASAP.

Thnx for your reply.
I collect figures many years, and I have the needed "repairing kit",
because I also use it when assembling custom figures.
But I prefer to use it when I want something to be changed or to fix a mistake I made.
To receive a full figure new & unopened, especially licensed at that state is heartbreaking.
Even more when I 've been waiting for it many months after the mistake with the wrong figure being sent that happened.

My retailer made a mistake and sent me Bilbo instead of Thorin which I had ordered.

Should I keep him and what price should I pay for him?

Anyway I will contact the retailer to see if Orcrist, handpeg and stand can be changed,
I will glue the oakenshield, trim the excess fur on the coat and decide later if I mess with the hair.
