i have the hardcover "gifted" which has the first 6 issues compiled inside.
and there's another 2 compilation books probably with another 6 issues in each.

i got into it because of the xmen vs seninal pieces...i really like the astonishing xmen costumes and look of the characters.

The costumes are pretty cool, but I can't help but cringe at Hank's "girdle." That thing must poke him in the armpits something awful.

Thank you. For some reason I thought they were done but when I read #20 last night, I knew I was wrong. I haven't read too many comics in my life but this has been by far the most enjoyable series I've ever read.

I'm by no means a purist. These are the most Marvel comics I've ever read. But I'm quickly getting hooked. Any other really good suggestions for me to check out?

You can't go wrong with any of the Ultimate (Spidey, X-Men, FF & Avengers) books, Amazing Spider-Man, The Eternals by Neil Gaiman was really good. If I could afford them, I'd buy all the Marvel Books!

I'm actually cheating and reading them online. There's so much material out there and I have a lot of catching up to do so that's the only way for me to really read a lot of the older stuff.

Starting with the next issue "Astonishing" becomes a monthly. This was meant to be bi-monthly but it didn't quite workout that way. I read the first 12 issue hardcover and liked it a lot. Perhaps now that the artist has straighened out his scheduling problems, someday soon I'll have a chance to read the next 12 issues in HC form.

There are 20 issues. It began as a monthly, then fell off the wagon. Then they made it a bi-monthly until issue #18. But JQ said in his last JQ Friday's that #21 has been delayed until May so Cassady can draw his issue of Civil War: Fallen Son. After that it will again be montly. But Cassady and Whedon are leaving after issue #24.

On another note....if you are looking for something else good to read start with X-men: Deadly Genesis and then pick up Uncanny X-men starting with issue #475. This is the Brubaker run and is a VERY good read. These two books have sucked me back in to the Marvel 616 books HARD. All the Ultimate titles are good too. I think the worst of them is Ultimate X-men. Ultimates is the best but we've been waiting 7 months for issue #13...so taking that into consideration Ultimate Spidey has really been the best.

If you're looking for some Marvel books to read en masse, take a look at any of the Daredevil story arcs written by Brian Michael Bendis. The New Avengers is also outstanding, and it probably couldn't hurt to start with the Avengers: Disassembled books if you wanted more background.

The current runs of Iron Man and Captain America have been no less than epic. It's the strongest run each of these heroes has had.

And let's not forget Planet Hulk, leading into this summer's epic World War Hulk...

I've been thinking about starting to read the Astonishing X-Men, you guys are doing nothing to dissuade me. My wallet hates this board.

I like the Ultimate lines because its started over so I don't have to try to figure out 40 years of backstory. But I'm dying for the next Ultimates TPB and it really annoys me that its taken so long so I started reading New Avengers. And I can't wait for summer to read the Civil War TPB's.

So sad that Kitty Pride is gone though. It's was cool to have her phase through the big giant bullet through the earth

I'll catrch up ont his thread when I'm bored at work tomorrow, but it brings up a good point. I haven't collected comics since I was much younger back in the 90's; I fortunately was collecting during McFarlane's heydey and all the other greats aorund that time.

So this hobby got me started reading again, about a month or two ago. And it was a little intimidating to get bakc in the hobby. There are so many damn choices out there. I picked up a few issues of Astonishing, have yet to read them. It seems like there are 8 or 9 different "X" stories out there (not including wolverine or cable offshoots), just about as many spidermans (where did this "ultimate series come from?) and way too many one-shots or mini-series. I still enjoy most of them, but I'm becoming much more selective in my choices, because if you're a completist, reading comics isn't for you. Plus, it looks like X-Force just started over again?!? I first started durign the time that Liefeld made New Mutants cool again and got laid shortly thereafter so stopped reading; but now they are back? How can you just start a series over again like that? Kind of pisses me off.

BTW, if you haven't checked it out yet, READ LOCKE and KEY. It's one of the best reads i've come across ever. It's only up to #4 and you'll probably have to settle for second printings like I did, but it's fantastic. IDW seems like a great company, they put out quality books from what I've seen so far.
