this is what I got from the trailer.........

Earthlings decided to invade Pandora. Pandorians stave off invasion. Frustrated, earthlings decided to infiltrate by using Pandorians, hence the title "Avatar". Earthlings does mind-transferring voodoo with selective recipient(s). Operation: Infiltrate successful. Infiltrator "escaped" or let go with full knowledge of what's to be done. Infiltrator meets local inhabitants. Locals wary but takes him in anyway. Avie meets alien girl. Falls for each other/ or alien girl thinks it's her alien boyfriend who went M.I.A...fall in love/were in love....bomchikawawaaaa............back to story, Avie full of guilt. Don't know what to do. Operation: Infiltrate commence. bang, pow, cho-choo-choo boom!..war is on..pandorians and earthings dead here and there. Pandorians losing war. Avie decides to help Pandorians. Pandorians wins the war but Avie dies while helping/ or live on and gets the girl in the end.............but I doubt it!.....hello, remember Titanic!?

Oh crap, this is where I exit this thread. It was bad enough watching the trailer. I really do want to see this film completely in the dark, or at least partially now that I've seen the trailer. Don't need to read speculative spoilers.

but I do want to leave with something.

Suspension of disbelief. Subverting the uncanny. It's fruitless to argue if Avatar will be able to achieve either. It's the story and characters that count.

My girlfriend hates trailers for that reason. They are called spoilers for a reason. In many instances they spoil a movie. I have to stop spoiling myself.

P.S. Wofford is blind. But not an idiot. Nope, just blind.

I am surprised you can even type. After all, you're blind. :D

And Ange Lee's hulk looked better than the Edward Norton Hulk. Granted I like the last Hulk movie more... well, maybe. Anyway, Avatar is unbeatable Wofford. Unfrickingbeatable.

Then again, the last Hulk, in all his veiny cardiovascular glory was pretty intense!

Peter Jackson's King Kong looked better than these blue elves.:peace

I gotta say people, this is a James Cameron movie. He did Titanic for crying out loud. Terminator....Aliens....ring a bell! Not only are these movies iconic but have pushed the boundaries of cinema. Avatar is no different. So what if the Na'vi creatures dont look 100% photoreal, this movie still conveys the best CG we have seen thus far and dont forget, its meant to be seen in 3D.

And we are not talking Coraline 3d at your local theater either. Those are movies made in 2d and converted to 3d, this movie was filmed using a camera made to shoot the movie IN 3D. So in other words, no more eyes hurting and half way decent 3d.

Also, if you have seen the trailer you have to remind yourself that the vegetation in the forest and pretty much everything but the humans are CG!!!

But lastly, the most important point of all- THE STORY. In the end, its all about the story. This movie will have heart. All those other tools and technologies are just that, they are tools to aid in the story telling. Cameron has spent the last 14 years waiting for the technology to match his vision, heck he and his team had to invent stuff just to pull it off. It will change the way we see movies and give us reason to go the theaters rather than download pirated movies.

I will be seeing the sneak peak on avatar day and ill chime in what I think.

I have also heard this spoiler was made to lower the unreal hype surrounding the movie. Keep in mind the trailer is 2min and the movie is 3 hours! They arent going to show anything too overwhelming at this stage.

lol Those blue elves. How dare you use the peace sign. Oh why do I care.. I didn't make this movie....

Wait... uh... forget it. I mean... you're blin... esh... so late. I really should go to bed, then we can resume our bickering tomorrow. It's already tomorrow? For Pete's sake!

As a student in animation and film, what you see is pretty much what you get. There is not much they can do in the next few months. They can tighten some things, but the visuals are pretty much "what you see is what you'll get" on opening day. This has taken years, and anyone who says some of the scenes look like this come from a game cut scene, or they have seen better, yeah, right. *rollseyes*

no, that is not entirely correct. i work in advertising, and am used to having complex cgi in some of the tv commercials i've done. plus i'm fairly well-versed with how cgi works. and i can tell you the turnaround time for ads is waaay shorter than in films. from the offline edit stage, where the cgi is just a placeholder, to the finished online stage, it's often a matter of weeks in between. and a WORLD of difference between the two versions. of course an ad is 30 to 60seconds versus a movie that's 90mins or so. but the principle is the same. the lack of time can be offset by the other major factors (see below).

using the scene in iron man as a benchmark, there was a pretty significant difference between the sdcc footage and the final cgi. now, i know there was a lot more time for jon favreau to fine-tune the effects, compared to the 4 months that cameron has. however, cameron has a MUCH bigger budget, meaning more processing power and artists at his disposal.

and this is the other major factor---1) money 2) time 3) a director with an eye for detail & the hard nose to push for higher standards.

bottom line is, the things i personally found lacking with the cgi are the things that CAN be fixed in the next few months: skin texturing, as well as colour and lighting matching/corrections.

in any case, i'm not judging the quality of the cgi based on this trailer.

All I know is I take forever. But then again I am a student. BUT, then again, this is no commercial. I probably lost half the stuff I learned from year 1 of my course this past Summer. I need to do my stuff in Maya, After Effects, and heck, all that stuff during the holidays.

don't worry you're working alone, whereas hollywood has an ARMY at its beck and call. so naturally, you'd take a lot longer to construct & render stuff. :D

i recently shot a few tv ads on cinered one, the spanking new digital cinematography rig used in films like public enemies. the image quality is amazing. and i was told that on this format the cgi process is faster. gotta find out exactly why that is. maybe i misunderstood the tech dude. they all speak greek.

WTF, does Eli have stock in this movie? Is James Cameron your dad?

STFU and leave this thread, you are making me want to hate this movie with all your caca love for it.

Looks ok. I didn't get that "awesome" feeling, but then again, it's just a teaser trailer. I'm still looking forward to the release date and I'm sure this will kick ass.

Well, with digital cameras you don't have to have the film processed and scanned into the computer, that was a major thing for Star Wars episode 2 and 3, they were able to start editing and post production as soon as they finished filming, though it still took 3 years for each film.

Effects can change a lot, depending on time, but movies get less and less time in post production now than they used to. I heard they were struggling trying to meet the Transformers 2 deadline. And with King Kong they had over 3,000 shots to complete and didn't get them done until 2 weeks before the film came out.

It's really expensive to redo shots, (depending on what needs to be redone), and considering lots of the footage in the trailer is stuff they've been showing around for a while it's most likely very final since they've had the time to examine it.

It'll be interesting to see what the final product will be like. Wish I could go to the footage screening (even had gotten tickets) but I have to work at that time.

None of those pushed the boundaries of cinema.

Damn am I in the SW section? All we need now is a diagram pointing out each others flaws. I will not enter this thread again. To many dorks bickering back and forth. :wave:lol

wow.... have you all forgotten the Iron Man trailer? Everyone said the CGI looked fake in that (and it did) and was proclaming it to be a big pile of Fail... and then when the film came out, guess what.... it was better

Calm down guys, seriously.

:lecture

I guess people have naturally come to lower their expectations for any film so as to not be disappointed when they actually see it. If it turns out much better than expected then all the better. ;)

Although I posted this in another thread on this forum I'll re-state it here as well. It didn't look too cartoony to me. The CGI looked great from where I'm sitting. The Na'vi look very realistic, and I'm sure the film will be polished even more before it's released. I have a feeling this will be a lot like a sci-fi version of Dances With Wolves, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The premise of Earthlings invading and conquering an alien species has a lot of potential. I'm very excited about this movie.

Assuming this film will be crap or great based on a 2 minute clip is madness. However we are taking James Cameron here so I am excited by what I have seen. I'll let you know how I feel about the movie once I have seen it.
