I meant "more forgiving"
Obviously that's how I read it.

Khev,
At the core I believe that is why you and I are more forgiving of minutia issues, we lived during a time when the best superheros you could get was in the comics.
True that comics still remain the best interpertations for some of these characters and stories, but what an incredible time we are in nonetheless.
Remember when the best live action Hulk was in a TV show (Banner was great though).
You and I can appreciate this stuff.
This is why STM is such a classic, we believed a man could fly way back in the 70's!
Same goes to bringing us a darker Batman in 89!
But ever since Blade 1 it has been quite the ride hasn't it.
Shame they made Superman driving people to suicide.
I didn't buy the dvd, waiting on the Rogue cut which I will buy come July.
Oh, and this is why I love the MCU
I watched DOFP 3D again last night. Still hella solid, though not without its flaws too. You can definitely see where the film shines (editing and score) over AoU. But on the flip side DOFP is more contrived and has more obvious "WTH" moments. I would guess that whichever team you're a bigger fan of (X-Men or Avengers) would dictate which film you prefer. Because they're both very good in their own ways.
Though Cap's "Avengers---" >>>>>>>>>>> Stryker's yellow eyes.
Defiantly more of an Avengers fan...
And really JAWS I'm inclined to think that you are just "forgiving" of the fact that The Avengers may have greater flaws than AoU because of a couple standout Hulk moments. Cap's awful cowl, the cringe inducing talk between Loki and Widow, a final battle that continues solely because Thor won't listen to orders but yet when it's allotted time frame is up all the bad guys just conveniently keel over, I could go on.
What's wrong with the Widow / Loki scene?
I cant remember what Order Thor would not listen to.. I must have really been forgiving there
Being 44 I was there with you.. Does not mean you guys should still not have standards
I agree with this 100%... I was introduces to the Superheros through TV syndication of 60's Batman and George Reeves Superman. So what we are seeing today is really amazing... and FUN!
Ran around in my back yard with a torn shirt .... I watched em all.. Wonder Woman, Spider-man, Flash, Cap.... Hulk was best... Which is not saying much..
Bah.... I lived through those times also... So I can appreciate where it all has come from... But we still have standards... Otherwise Jye you would like IM3 more
I don't know where those same standards went for AOU.. I think the big pretty lights and explosions distracted you from then film itself j/k
This is still a great family film... But it really comes down to that I believed that Christopher Reeve could fly... I don't think this film holds up at all had they cast anyone else...
I should probably run for the hills after I state this next part.
Batman 89 had a great look but as a film... Meh.... That film is Nostalgia 101 IMO... If people could take off those glasses they would see the average action, poor story, and lack of good characters. (If not for the comics we would not get a real feel for Wayne or Batman in this film) Plus it's funny the same people who get mad at Superman killing Zod in MOS are big fans of the Serial Killer Keaton played in the Batman films ... Sure it was not the 60's show and it did set a trend... But it was the look and serious tone... Not the film itself... Had this not been a batman film nobody would care.
Basically I have never cared for it. Even when it first came out.. The warts were obvious to me from the start. I like it less now.
PS I hate Tim Burton films
Blade one was and is great... Not perfect... If you could take the action choreography from Blade 2 and put it in Blade1 you might have an argument for best Marvel movie.. (leave the Rave scene alone though)
You talking about that MOS movie again... You know I have another word I think of when I see MOS
Don't know why I am responding to this other then to say that I was there with you guys and I get what you are saying... But I am not as forgiving... I am a film fan first and foremost... So I still want a great film to tell a story about hero's that I love...
I think Jye you are more forging period when it comes to films... You can sit back and just enjoy a film and not worry as much about the faults... That is great and I am not saying that is a bad thing.. Just pointing out that its not just Superhero films you do this with...
I don't know about Khev as much.. But I think he liked all the Hobbit films a lot and was very forgiving of them...
Having said that... I am not as forgiving... But that don't make me right... It just makes me mean
I don't like average film making... Not when I know something better can be or has been done... PJ showed what he was capable of in the LOTR films so I found that he really dropped the ball in the Hobbit films... Not that I don't find some enjoyment out of them but I can't look past the faults as easily.
Same with AOU.... JW made a pretty perfect avengers film the first time around.. He came across as a fan making a Superhero movie.. Everything we dreamed of or saw in the comics was there... Not so much for AOU.. The unmemorable action, the plot holes, the uninteresting drones, the average villain... I could not look past these things. Not when he got it so right the first time around. It does not mean I can't find some enjoyment out of it... But the let down outweighs the good things.
Having said that...It does not mean that I am right or that you are... I am just pointing out that some people are more forgiving of things in films in general not just with the MU and that some of us were around the same time you were but still can't forgive a films shortcomings.
Hell how films like Avatar, Furious 7, Independence Day, Transformers 4 (looking at you Jye yes I am throwing it in your face this time), etc.. become huge box office films that people love is beyond me...
But I love having these discussions... My best friend and I share very similar tastes.. So when we go to the films together we rarely disagree.. Which is cool.. But it either turns into a Praise fest or a ***** fest... it's fun to disagree with someone about a film and see where they are coming from.
:LOL... Even by 1988 standards.. this was bad.
Basically each film is watching Wolverine get his ass kicked (Sabertooth, Mystique, Magneto, Juggernaut, Lady Deathstrike, Sabertooth, again, Deadpool, Ninjas, Ninja robot, Magneto again, etc... ) and Magneto lifting something heavy (Cop cars, X-men Plane, Golden Gate Bridge, Boat Anchor, Submarine, Baseball stadium etc.. ). they don't do enough with the other characters.. Of course some of those other characters have the dumbest X-men powers (Porcupine face) or most annoying and dumb (Banshee)
And really JAWS I'm inclined to think that you are just "forgiving" of the fact that The Avengers may have greater flaws than AoU because of a couple standout Hulk moments. Bad guys all dying was silly... Can't argue with that... Of course the film had set out to do what it wanted to do... Another 20 min of cleaning up the city of left overs would have possibly been too much for the average film goer.. I would have loved it though
Caps Helm might look silly but did not affect the film itself.. It's like if I complained about Ulton's lips... I did not like them and thought they were dumb... But they did not effect my enjoyment..
Lack of great Hulk moments did effect my enjoyment.. But that could have been made up for by great moments by other characters.. Other then Cap throwing the motorcycle (Love it) there was not much else that was memorable... All just quick throw away action...
Oh yeah and the screwed Hulk over... Did I mention that.
Flaws in AOU could have been easier to overlook had it made up for it in other ways like the original Avengers did... I did not notice the flaws because the film was well paced, funny, and exciting... AOU... For me... Not so much... Thus the warts were very obvious and not covered up..
Here is the AOU biggest flaw.
So this is the screen time for each Avenger in Age of Ultron. Thought it was interesting.
Vision - 8:41
Thor - 14:18
Hawkeye - 19:56
Scarlet Witch - 20:59
Bruce Banner / Hulk - 23:55
Quicksilver - 26:43
Black Widow - 33:07
Iron Man - 45:34
Captain America - 50:25
The whole thing. I just find it to be a goofy conversation. It feels so deliberately "written" and "acted." It just doesn't have a natural or organic flow at all. Hawkeye's intimate knowledge of BW's fears? Where did that come from? And since when does she have weird fears about being killed in a certain way? Red in my ledger? Who talks like that? The whole thing is just weird.
And I mentioned Thor a few pages back. Cap told him to contain the breach and he DID. He was lighting up Leviathans two at a time and obliterating every chariot that came through...for about 30 seconds. Then he bailed on Cap's orders and flew through the city so we could get some "hero" moments while bad guys continued to flow into the city unmolested. Until their time is up and the script calls for them to die.
Who says we needed 20 minutes of them mopping up? Just have the Chitauri "bug out and go home" like the MIG's at the end of Top Gun. Mothership destroyed and portal closed? We're outta here. They hop in their chariots and just fly out into space. No need to go full Phantom Menace. Never go full Phantom Menace.
But I'll stop. I know TA is a top fave around here and I don't need to start a big back and forth about it but it's "flaws" just really keep it from being top shelf (or better than AoU) for me. Galaga joke never gets old though.
And I was joking about you not being a bigger Avengers fan than X-Men. You prefer DOFP to AoU and I prefer DOFP to TA. Go figure.
While I get that JW wanted to build up BW because of his fetishes and obssessions, I also do find some of the conversation to be forced, then again TDK ends with a wacky speech by Gordon to his son, who talks like that, to a kid no less.
