I got to thinking ... and I can't help but consider Ultron the audience's subconscious when he began blasting away at Widow and Hulk during her attempted lullaby near the end - effectively ending their relationship.

And both he and Vision got to acknowledge the haters as well.

Vision: "I suppose we are both disappointments."

Ultron: "I suppose we are."

:D

Well I think the biggest thing to consider with Gruber is that he never really made a mistake. That's one of several things that made him really special. He wasn't done in by doing something contrived, stupid, or inconsistent with his character. He had a perfect plan, could not have predicted a loose cannon like John McClane being a part of it, and successfully improvised against everything John did right up to the end. There's no way Hans could have anticipated the duct tape gun, and even after that, *still* almost blew away either John or Holly before they got her bracelet off.

He oozed charisma and class and by his own shockingly consistent competence made McClane one of the great action heroes of cinema.

I strongly recommend that you give Die Hard, and Gruber, another chance.

Great post! :clap

I'd also like to add that up to that point, movie villains were pretty cookie cutter and not nearly as intelligent or stylish, especially in that kind of American action movie. Hans was a formidable match to the hero, whereas before, most villains were one dimensional "evil" guys whose demise you could see coming a mile away. With Hans, there was a damn good chance he could have won, since he seemed to always be one step ahead of the good guys and like Khev pointed out, could improvise when something unexpected came up. And that was something virtually unseen up to that point, and frankly has been rarely seen since.

I also liked Simon.

What kind of world do we now live in that Has freaking Gruber needs to be defended. :lol

Exactly. Kids today. They'll analyze a breadcrumb into some 'origin-story' mumbo-jumbo mis-reading life into each orifice.

I can't tell you the amount of posts wasted on justifying Ultron's gimmicky one-liners with the Stark origin story logic...

Ultron should've had Gruber's accent.

Ultron should have been an insanely brilliant mind -- underline insanely -- with a very limited robot body. That would demonstrate his frustration PLUS add motivation for the new body. He worked best when he was mumbling madness in that defective Mark I body. And he was more unique AND scary.

The moustache-twirling later just turned him into a cartoon -- and the CGI was bad enough that they didn't need to accentuate it with cartoon lines and Pinocchio music.

Alan rickman as Ultron would have been pretty great actually :lol

You want to know what, just because I embrace the comic book come to life in AOU does it mean i'm blind to the problems.

There were things in AOU that I had dreams about as a kid, and for those reasons I love the movie.

But I can also appreciate smart criticism.

His defective body version was awesome and twisted.

Yes, it'd be great if they could still find a character for him. Maybe MODOK? :lol

I really want to see Eva Green as Madame HYDRA.

Brolin has such presence and up to now he's just been wasted with how they've been portraying Thanos. He has such a rare combination of physicality, stone cold presence, and acting chops. I can't help but think he would have been better suited as a non-CGI character.

Would have made a great original Nick Fury too.

What? A white Nick Fury? Are you like, a racist or something? Check your privilege!
