Get both.

Seriously. Get both, compare the two in person, then decide which one you like better and sell the other. Both have their pluses and negatives.

That's what I did. Loved them both, but I kept the Returns in the end. Has a sleeker, more polished appearance which I like. I feel the texture on the 89 is off but that's a *very* minor nitpick, not a dealbreaker. Paint apps on the Returns seemed better (as they should, it being more recent) but not by much.

And finally, in terms of time period -- the Returns era was more eventful and resonant for my personal life at that time, as was the film, flawed though it is.

I am not thinking about getting a custom cape at this point.
Based on the many reviews I've seen for both figures it seems that with some futzing both capes can work nicely, even the thicker DX09 one.

While this is true, my 89 had a Tony Meis cape which looked cooler to me and was easier to work with, and my Jaxon cape for Returns is -- in my opinion -- indispensable for drape and ease.

89 is more classic, but the 92 suit is more sleek and and refined. The 89 suit is kind of crude in comparison.

More so for the figures than the film costumes, I feel -- although the lines of the 92 cowl are aggressive and sleek as hell.

[...]I, for one, sold my DX09 for the MMS293 as I prefer Batman Returns (the movie as well as the suit) , and I still have the NECA Batman + custom cape as 89 representation. But that's just me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What I wound up doing.

But really...you just can't go wrong with either one of them. Both of them stand out to me as some of HT's finest work, and maybe down the road you will pick up a Returns Bat, who knows?

Both. The best versions of Batman you'll ever get. There's Ben Affleck and Adam West too but still. No one beats Keaton

1989. The rough appearance of The Bat is still one of, if not, the best designs ever. Started it all. The whole muscle-suit thing. Plus, it looks more like what a guy dressed up as a Bat would look like and more believable that he could take punches while wearing it.

To me, the 1992 version looks more "Hollywood", and lacked the beautiful "rough edges" of something made-at-home, or in a cave.

The 89 Batman is akin to the ANH Vader, raw, dirty and rough - while the 92 Batman is more refined like the ESB Vader.

Look at that face plate.

Great comparison. I have both of them and they are awesome for different reasons. Each one also has a custom cape. I prefer 89 suit but Returns has a great cowl. Keaton is my favorite Batman and to me has the meanest face in the cowl.

If HT released Batman Forever and Batman & Robin figures would you buy them?
I would, I don't like the movies but I like Batman and the costume designs are pretty good.

IMO, 89 is the best. Better movie, better suit, the 92 cowl is sexy but I always loved the raw 89 one. When the returns came out I PO it and a few weeks later saw it in a local store. I remember being desapointed. It’s a beautiful figure but compared to DX09, it felt too sleek and linear. I canceled my PO. Every time I see BR, even if I like the movie, I always saw Michael Keaton in a fancy dress. 89 is Batman!
And 89 emblem! The best to date!

I'm happy with my 92 Batman but really have to get the 89 version eventually. My excuse for waiting is the hope of them doing a 1/4 version at some point.
