Well, it is because you live in US and there are bigger chance that you pre-ordered the bust much cheaper. For me I am from Europe so it cost much more.

most retailers drop ship 1:1s so they come straight from sideshow anyway

The gamble remains that if the piece is damaged you may have to fork $60+ to ship those huge boxes back to the retailer for a replacement.

I can see a case for both ordering direct at retail or taking a chance for a nice discount through a retailer.

That is alot to consider! I have always ordered from SS because of the operational ease of everything.
