Yeah, a third film in a series that starts with two problematic movies is far from a sure thing. After people have been burned a couple times even the diehards tend not to care anymore. I mean it's crazy that X-Men First Class only made a fraction of X3 but after Ratner's flick and that horrible Wolverine movie people barely acknowledged that finally a good film came along.

Even Batman Begins wasn't a smash after distancing itself from the Schumacher flicks. The Force Awakens is the only film I can think of that was a megahit after multiple sequel misfires but as we know nothing with Star Wars really applies to any other franchises.

Transformers, Pirates of Caribbean and Jurrasic World had terrible sequels, and the latest films broke records.

Suicide Squad and WW will either help or also hurt JL.

I suppose so. I guess the only difference between those and the DCEU is as that guy mentioned; that at least each and every one of those franchises had a solid opening film.

Yeah, they had one film that was well received by both fans and critics, and Transformers, Pirates, and JW had that small advantage. The DCEU doesn't have that yet...maybe they will with SS or WW.

Reviewer assumes that the audience responds to a film the same way that movie reviewers do. Among movie-goers, Batman V Superman wasn't an overwhelming success, but by and large it was liked (B Cinemascore rating). Admittedly, there is a parallel here with Ninja Turtles. But Ninja Turtles and Tomb Raider ain't Batman and friends. TMNT and Tomb Raider are far more niche, and appeal to a more limited fan-base. Many people who go to see those at first may just do it for the novelty, and have no interest in revisiting those "worlds." But Batman is a huge cultural icon that spans generations, and is going to appeal to people in almost any guise you put him in. People are going to want to see more every time out. Of course, I'm not the biggest supporter of this franchise, but I think the rampant speculation by that article's author is off-base. It is very possible JL will do less well than Batman V Superman. But I wouldn't expect a catastrophic decline in ticket sales.

You stink :monkey3

The movie had Batman, Superman and WW and didn't break 1B.

WB should be very very worried.

Don't look at me, I liked the damn movie.

But that's just the ugly reality WB has to deal with now.

Well as with Batman V Superman, it will depend on expectations. There is a law of diminishing returns with stuff the audience doesn't truly gravitate to (we even saw this with the Avengers franchise over at Marvel). So I certainly wouldn't hang my hat on making more than Batman V Superman with those. But maybe it's not unrealistic to expect, say, $200 million domestically and $650 million worldwide. And maybe that's a success. Who knows?

JL will be fine- I think WB is going to have a HUGE hit box office-wise with SS or WW or both. Solo Batman film will be huge, so JL may not factor in as heavily important as the deemed "unsuccessful" BvS

The only ugly reality is that most of these blockbusters are not good at all yet the general audience doesn't care. So all they have to do to ensure the success is make good films instead of mediocre to crappy fan service rides.

Matthew Vaughn will do the "New" Teen Titans, and Mike Judge will do Justice League International. And those films will save WB from all the other misguided failures in their arsenal.

I honestly expected BvS to crush CW at the box office. I said as much several times prior to both films' releases. I assumed the novelty of The Trinity would vastly trump another go round with the same old Avengers that audiences have been seeing every year. The fact that CW is sitting at $300+ worldwide MORE than BvS is a shocking testament to just how much WB dropped the ball and how much the Russos delivered.
