Yup. And Batman almost was.
Things like the gold belt and cape were almost nixed in 2004 and, to his credit, it actually took Goyer's convincing to get those on film. The no cape thing almost occurred in Dark Knight too for half the film because of the Batpod.
That's the thing, the trunks are only out of style because a film or a comic dictates it as such. If Batman appeared in the film this way, you'd have kids and a whole generation that would lay claim that it is more "practical", "real" and "makes sense" this way.
Thus making this "outdated" and hokey,
