My favorite songs by my two favorite groups. I love both of these songs for different reasons.

When Brian lay in his bed for days at a time, listening to the music being recorded beneath his feet and pondering the distance between who he'd been in the mid-1960s and who he had come to be in the early 1970s, there could be no more accurate portrait than in the lyrics of "A Day in the Life of a Tree." - pg.160 & 161 (Catch A Wave by Peter Ames Carlin)

According to Lennon, the song's origins can be found when English journalist Kenneth Allsop made a remark that Lennon should write songs about his childhood.[2] Afterwards, Lennon wrote a song in the form of a long poem reminiscing on his childhood years. The original version of the lyrics was based on a bus route he used to take in Liverpool, naming various sites seen along the way, including Penny Lane and Strawberry Field.[3]

Had to go with in My Life. I love that song, if I listen to it in the right mood I can get a little choked up.

I thought you weren't big on either my bad.

But of the two you don't prefer one to the other? Not even a little bit?

In My Life could be a song about anybody. Its much more readily ideantifialbe by whoever listens to it.

A Day In The Life of a Tree is specificially an allagory about Brian and I guess one could only identify with its sentiments if you were depressed. :lol

It depends upon my mood, but I had to go with Brian and the Beach Boys for two reasons:

1) Pity :lol

2) I think the final 15 seconds of A Day In The Life of a Tree is some of the most beautifully recorded harmonies Brian ever did and I just want it to last far longer than it does.

I went to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame years ago, and at the time, someone associated with them named "In My Life" the greatest rock song of all time. I remember seeing a display about it or something.

Has anyone seen the documentary Imagine: John Lennon by Andrew Solt? Its really great. The ending credits use In My Life to great effect. :monkey2

A Day In The Life of a Tree is a beautiful song, but it can't beat In My Life for me.

Hmmmm.... interesting choices.....I choose

All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix. :lol

Wow. I really, really enjoyed A Day In The Life Of A Tree. Seriously. Beautiful.

That's the way it is with me though. I got both Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Pet Sounds co-currently and I just couldn't stop listening to Pet Sounds. It means more to me. I have always felt that Brian's later work was very sincere. Not knocking the Beatles or anything because they are great- I guess I just have a preference. :lol
