It depends upon my mood, but I had to go with Brian and the Beach Boys for two reasons:

1) Pity :lol

2) I think the final 15 seconds of A Day In The Life of a Tree is some of the most beautifully recorded harmonies Brian ever did and I just want it to last far longer than it does.

I just felt the same way. :lol

I also love the harmonies at the end of You Still Believe in Me. Wow the first time I heard that I wanted it to last forever but it's so short!

Its kinda of sad that if people think of Brian they think "Surfin USA" because there is such a rich treasure trove of material he created.

Have you heard the Pet Sounds tapes which have the backing track removed leaving only the vocals? It is absolutely glorious (especially You Still Believe In Me). Thanks to Batty, I have all that stuff.

I was guilty of that I am ashamed to admit. I listened to the old Surfing and Car Beach Boy's songs for years before I gave their/Brian's later work a chance. I am really glad I finally did.

In My Life, actually my fave Beatles song -- most of the time. :monkey2

I do appreciate Wilson's writing however, and quite a bit; but he was against a juggernaut here. :horror

No I actually haven't heard those mixes. They are all a capella? That sounds awesome! Are they available on a certain CD? I have the Pet Sounds album with the original mono recordings faithfully remastered. It also comes with them redone in stereo. I think I will have to hear what you are talking about. Youtube is my friend in these cases. :lol

I vacilate alot between In My Life, Strawberry Fields Forever, and A Day in the Life as my favorite Beatle songs. :lol

You Put anything against the Beatles and its a juggernaut though.

Conversely I alternate between A Day In The Life of a Tree, Surf's Up, and Good Vibrations as my favorite Beach Boys. Perhaps Good Vibrations would have had a stronger showing.

Here is You Still Believe in Me a cappella. Man that ending gives me chills. Awesome. :D

It was a big Pet Sounds box set that came out a few years ago. Someone may have uploaded them on youtube but you lose perhaps a touch of fidelity listening to it that way. :lol

Ah the miracle of D'internetz.

Brian is truly a genius. That box set proves it.

Definitely. I am pretty anal about sound so I know what you mean. Compressed audio can sound really whacky.

I like both bands a lot, In My Life is a great song by a great band.

I'm not a fan of that Beach Boys song however. Its a little monotonous for me.

I love hearing songs covered by other artists too. I think it really exposes the beauty that lies in the notes outside of the artist who composed the song.

I think I'm coming to know your taste a bit. You seem to like a lot of raw music.

I typically like things really really polished, which is why I don't like most punk or grunge.

I like both, but its typically the raw that draws me in. Thats why I really hated the beach boys for a long time. It took reading an interview with the Flaming Lips to draw me in and get curious enough to actually check the BB out.

But you're right. I value honesty in music and typically the more raw something is the easier to preceive the honesty vs. pretension factor. Thats why I love to hear music stripped down. :naughty
