Update: Already finished volumes 13 and 14. I know that they've reprinted the manga several times in the past, so can you guys foresee them doing it again? Pretty much everything is out of print again.

Yeah I'm wondering if they are reprinting.. I was thinking of buying them, but I can't have holes in the collection. What did you think about Volume 13..?

There was some talk not too long ago about reprints from some source but I think it ended up as being false. Maybe one day they will...

I had the whole collection but sold a few old/worn out volumes last year, and typical of my luck the ones I need are the ones out of print. I'm missing volumes 7, 28, and 31, re-purchased a whole a bunch of fresh ones though.

There's nothing better than reading Berserk on paper but you can read the Dark Horse scans up to volume 37 on this website. Pretty good scans as well.

The easiest way to summarize my feelings for Berserk is just mixed. I think my main problem with it so far has been that many story lines feel almost like filler due to the pacing. The villains are another issue--I find most of them cheesy, dull, borderline Shounen, and reeking of filler for whatever reason. I wasn't even impressed with Zodd. Skull Knight seems cool so far, but to have only one "villainous" character that you like after reading 100+ chapters is very disappointing.

I was reading through the first few pages of this thread and saw that people were loving the Band of the Hawk members, their friendship with Guts, and their characterization. I felt the opposite. I don't think Miura is very good at character building. Aside from Guts and Griffith, none particularly held my interest. When all of his companions were dying, I thought it was awesome, but I didn't care, per say. I didn't even remember any of their names, and their "characterization" was limited to a few scenes and flashbacks throughout the entire arc. My biggest problem, though, lies with Casca. I have a problem with the way Miura writes female characters. At least for now, as I haven't read the rest and can't say whether or not that's changed. I'd go into detail, but I don't want to bog this post down too much. Let me know if you want to talk about it.

Overall, while I think that Berserk is very flawed so far, I still really enjoyed the arc. It's exciting, the art is amazing, and Guts is an awesome character, so that's more than enough to keep me reading. I want to buy the merch now just because of how cool Guts is.

@Caped Baldy: I actually found the Dark Horse scans in their entirety (at least I believe the whole run) on a site called MangaSee. I would highly recommend it--no ads or viruses or anything.

I was never a fan of zodd TBH. Don't know why. He just sorta shows up out of nowhere a lot.

Good! I ordered a few of the volumes that were still in print in no particular order just so I could see what it was like reading it on paper. I'm currently re-reading the first couple of volumes now that I've finished the Golden Age.

Got my Three Zero Guts today. After seeing him in hand i actually do like him a bit more than my medi Guts. Articulation is quite good, and the ratchet joints are sturdy. I love that the throwing knives and repeating crossbow are individually removable and the use of soft goods is spot on. Very happy to have them both. "Meh" cell phone pics in spoiler.

Hopefully I'm not bothering anyone by being such a noob, but now that I've read through the Golden Age arc, I was wanting to try to get my boyfriend into it with the anime. Should we watch the original anime or the newer movies followed by the new anime series? My boyfriend hates manga, but he's okay with some anime. He liked Attack on Titan, so I think he might like Berserk. Since he isn't an anime fan, I was leaning more toward the newer stuff. Thoughts?

Also, to avoid being a ****, I really love everyone's photos. The Threezero figure looks great, and since I'm already collecting their GOT line, I think I may pick up Guts.

To be honest with you, even before you posted your updated impressions I had a feeling you weren't gonna be crazy about this arc. I don't mean that as an insult, it's just that you sounded less than thrilled in your earlier posts and I suspected you would find issues with it. Oh well, you still have much ground to cover in the story still, puny mortal!

The Hawks' developments was always something I considered to be slightly undercooked in the arc. You never have a massive attachment to them as while the characterisation is good, they don't have tons of development. But even then they were not the central characters at focus in that arc; that belonged to Guts, Casca and Griffith who were given good development and were well written as they should have been. The Hawks served as a means to interact with Guts and co and also bring to light the motivation of revenge hinted in the beginning of the series. By the end of the eclipse could you understand why Guts was the way he was at the beginning of the series? Why he was so merciless against those apostles? The Hawks were there to serve that purpose, pretty much.

Same as some of the side 'villains' who served nothing more than temporary fodder for the good guys to slice up. I would have an issue if the God Hand and Griffith were treated like that since they are major villains, but for the lesser bad guys it's not a big deal. I would not quite class Skully as a villain either...

In my opinion, the World building, characterisation and storytelling in later arcs is stronger. What Berserk just lacks in the later arcs is that raw, hard hitting emotional storytelling of the Golden Age. That arc is and will always be considered one of the greatest manga arcs ever. But it's not my favourite arc in Berserk believe it or not and I actually scratch my head when people say it's all downhill from there.

The conviction and hawk of the millennium empire arcs, and the themes they touched upon, were superb. Heck, even the Lost Children arc that is seen as filler by many, has some of the best storytelling and one of the most brutal fights in the series.

You said that Miura wasn't very good at character building. I think you may (or may not) actually find some delight in the character development of Guts and the newer characters later on. Some don't like the new characters in Guts' little gang, I find them to be incredibly flawed and well written characters whom I have become so attached to that if anything bad happens to them, I would be devastated far more than what happened to the Hawks.

I've had the ThreeZero Guts for a while now, but I don't know if I want to open it or wait until Prime 1's big reveal and maybe sell my Threezero. It really depends on what kind of pose they go for with Prime 1. Their Arkham line is very impressive at 1:3, but with 1:4 I would hope they would go for a more action-like pose for Guts (their Witcher statue is cool). I like articulated figures, but if a statue is done right, you can pull off an action pose that'll look far more natural than a figure. I'm very conflicted, but I'll be patient with my decision.

Who knows, maybe if he likes Berserk enough he might just give a manga a chance.

As a Berserk fan, I didn't like the new anime movies that much. It felt souless, but if your bf is into cool action scenes then he might like it. I'm still a big fan of the 90s anime (even though it misses out on some big manga moments too).

I agree! While I love the Golden Age it's not my favorite arc even though it's amazing! And I did love the Band of the Hawk, but I love Guts' gang later on in Hawk of the Millennium Empire much more! I feel like almost all of the characters in Guts' gang are really interesting and relate-able and have really good character development.
Some people say Golden Age was the peak but I'm the opposite, I consider it only the beginning of how incredible Berserk is. There's so many incredible moments beyond the Golden Age that define what Berserk is that are just waiting for you.
