I was thinking back to all the great action movies of the past, and wondering if we'll even have "action" movies again that are not MCU/DCEU related or with "super" people in them?

John Wick is the formula that stands the best chance of success.

Bankable proven "movie star" as a lead. Relatively small budget for the first film. Hope for a franchise.

Outside of Tom Cruise, that leaves Denzel Washington. I mean an actor where fans will go to see anything the actor makes, and enough of them to support a possible franchise.

The Punisher could work as a film trilogy. If the MCU would let it become hard R.

The struggle with modern action movies is you no longer have the larger than life action stars of the 80s/90s. But if I am being fair, the majority of those 80s/90's action movies were pretty bad in retrospect. A few hold up via the test of time - Die Hard, Predator, Under Siege, Terminator, etc, etc, but it gets thin fast.

Commando could get a reboot and might work. Bring back Arnie and Alyssa Milano.

If you can make an action star of Keanu Reeves and Nick Cage, you can do it with almost anyone. Liam Neeson, an action star? But yeah, it happened. Not everyone can look and sound like Jason Stratham or Daniel Craig. There's plenty of room for Everyman Heroes too, which are sorely missing today and have been for years. I'm so sick of the Rock. I'm also sick of the quiet man with the "unusual set of skills" or the ex-special forces-in-hiding agent...

How about John Cena or Idris Elba?

Idris is great. Not sure why no one has tried to build an action franchise with him.

But again, seems you're pulling people that are naturally big built hero types... and I think that's the problem. The 70's had a lot of action movies with people that didn't look like Arnold -- average guys, cops and detectives, that just stumbled on a conspiracy or crime ring. The 80's had a lot of heroic characters besides Arnold and Sly or VanDamme and Seagal.

Got to get away from John Cena types.

You mentioned Daniel Craig... there's always James Bond, although he's a superhero of sorts. Also, we're getting more Mad Max movies, although it's actually Furiosa movies, which I'm fine with.
I wish we could get more Atomic Blonde movies, because that movie is perfection IMHO.
And wasn't there talk of a Lethal Weapon remake?

Just came back from my second screening. I will admit, the action parts are entertaining. Everything else is well...

A lot of the stuff that happened here could have been avoided had
Waller simply called her alien friend. Or if Shazam arrived to help (they knew about Shazam given how much they knew of the wizards). A lot of the conflict with Black Adam would have also been avoided had Hawkman not been there (he was the hothead that created a lot of the mess too).

Amon is one of the most annoying kids I've seen. He's maybe 12-13 in this film but he has the brain of a 5 year old. Take him and his lousy uncle away and this would have been a better film IMO.

It's nice to see that the feedback here is fairly positive. I'll still wait for this on streaming though.

Movie is worth watching in theaters. Theater sound is unparalleled unless you spend $$ on your personal home theater with proper acoustics. Did I mention the giant screen?

Yeah, when was the last time we got a John McClane? Am I forgetting something or has it been many years?

Bond has been around my entire life, so I just don't count him anymore; he's always there.

Still waiting on Max. The last time I waited it took 29 years.

I'd prefer something new to a remake. The idea of a Lethal Weapon remake does not excite me in the least. Maybe they'll put two roided out actors together to bicker and spar -- like The Rock and John Cena.

I am glad you guys are enjoying the movie, but this will be one of the many which will get a lot worse with time. It is not good for repeated viewings IMO because there is nothing the movie has to offer except action. It will get boring very fast. Too bad. Black Adam deserve more and frankly the DC universe as a whole.

Eh. The movie is not a must watch for me so I don't really mind.

I don't know, I can see the movie still being a fun ride no matter how often I watch it. It's got a bunch of badass looking superheroes, some pretty cool action, and the Rock and Pierce Brosnan both being charismatic as hell.

But guess I'll find out this weekend when I go see it a second time.

This movie was really entertaining from beginning to end. I loved Dr Fate and Hawkman. Why do other shows have Hawkman such a weak bitch, I always remembered he has superpowers in the 80s and this movie shows it off with his going toe to toe with BA. I need atleast a 1/6 Dr Fate and Hawkman.

Dr. Fate is in this? Oh wait... it's Prof. Fate I'm thinking of.

Enjoyed the movie just as much the second time. The writing and dialogue are as generic as can be, but somehow the actors all bring enough charisma to make it work anyway.

I'm kinda mystified by that end credits scene though. BA just spend the last 2 hours fighting and eventually making peace with the Justice Society, and seemed to have embraced his new role as "protector", and now they're promising another big battle with Superman over... pretty much the same thing?
