is blackbox coat better than supermad?
I think so.
If you trim the fur and weather it up.

I considered both and felt that both coats had strengths and weaknesses but preferred the Supermad one overall from photos and reviews I saw online, so I opted for the Supermad figure. With my body, I think it looks very close to the film in fit and overall look. I also like that it has the writing on the back. The Blackbox 2.0 does, too but it is very rare and expensive. But I can see that the Supermad one is now too on eBay US.

I'll eventually wax my Supermad coat. I might give it a wash or two to make it blander, too. I really love this outfit and with a new body and custom head, I am very happy and proud with my K figure, thus far. Note that the coat has some nice weathering (dirt/ dust) to it that rarely captures on my camera.

Honestly, the more I look at my sculpt, the more I want to set the damn thing on fire and start again.

I shouldn't have had the painter send it when I wasn't satisfied. But it had already gone through one revision.

On one hand, 357 gave it what they could. But for that premium price, I thought they could do better.

That's the problem with customs. It's a gamble. An uncertain outcome. And you run the risk of wasting your money.

Sorry to hear you aren't happy with your sculpt.

Yeah, custom work can be a lot of trial and error and money, which is what I invest in to achieve the best I can and results I am happy with.

Funny that, everyone I have spoken to swears by 357 as one of the very best, if not the best figure painters. But I don't like the look of many 357 paint ups that I have seen online but I like some I have seen. I don't love their take on Ford and Indy and have my own preferred painter for Indy. I find that often-time, the heads look too hyper-real an clinical/ clean in appearance, and sometimes too sweaty and as as if the person is sick. Oftentimes the eyes look off for the person to me, too. I find they can lack the imperfections and rawness that an actual face would have. That said, I always reserve room for judgement till I can see something in person. I am not sure how consistent they are, since they use different painters. I have been told that it varies as a result, however.

If you can strike a good rapport and communicate with your painter easily and in depth, that really helps. I know the feeling and how you feel but you can always have your head repainted, so try not to stress and be upset about it.

Wishes

I'm sure you would have no problem selling the 357 sculpt. Could always have them try again if you can secure another sculpt and have the patience. I do find that I have to give them specific direction on the eye color now after getting a Han Solo one time with blue eyes.

I think the Jnix K is still better than or as good as all the others K sculpts out there. I went for a slightly beat up look like at the end of the movie for mine. None of the best K sculpts are a home run though. Tough face to capture exactly it seems.

The K that I have currently, Buffy Head, Supermad Toys outfit and boots with Por Toys gloved hands and blaster.

I got into customs late so Yunsil set is impossible to locate, I will be done with this character when I’m able to find a set.

i been googling Blackbox vs Supermad K but seems unlike Madmax there isnt really any comparison between the 2.

i have both but cant really decide who to keep.

so can anyone that has both tell us from Head to Toe which version is better part by part. i can tell supermad accessories are better but i cant decide between the rest. even the head, coat, pants, shoes.

If you were to build the ultimate K from parts from these 2 brands what would be your option?

any reason you went with supermad instead of black box or are there parts where you felt blackbox would be better?

Hard to say, as I never had both in hand. And there's hardly much to go by, other than the photos people share (and there's a lot of those).

I've surmised the following is best between the two.

Supermad shirt
Blackbox pants
Blackbox shoes

Both coats have potential. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, but both require some heavy modification. I wouldn't mind one over the other, but generally I like the modded Blackbox coats I've seen more.

I'd toss both sculpts aside.
Neither is a viable option I think.

lol i only have 1 supermad but 2 black box.

care to explain more why the pants and shoes on the blackbox feels better? what about accessories?

anyone care to photoshop the 1/1 Detective K along side these 2?
Blackbox pants win for color.

And the shoes are better because...
Better scale, authentic material and lacing beat Supermad's sloppy sculpt and paint (Although I like that those are weathered).

Supermad wins for accessories.

Hi both,

I think two important factors are being left out, head sculpt (size) and body (size/ proportions). From my own experience working on my K, I think these effect the final look and accuracy of both outfits and so, careful selection and modification, I think, could make either outfit great. Note, I haven't owned the Blackbox figure, so am going by second hand experience of that one only. As always, I find that it is a careful balancing act of working with a. the limitations of the outfit(s) available and b. bodies/ customisation work to achieve the most accurate likeness and screen-accuracy to the actor and character. However, if most of the custom head sculpts are of similar size to my V Collectibles sculpt, I do think the Supermad coat and outfit overall might be more screen-accurate and potentially easier to work with. This is because I think putting the Blackbox coat on a beefier chest/ body is needed to make it more screen accurate, but that would most likely make the head look too small. I detailed some of this in my recent in-depth writeups. I shared the links to these yesterday and have included them again at the end of this post.

Look carefully and you can see that the Blackbox coat is too large and cumbersome on the stock Blackbox body. It fits too loose and wide on the arms and it sleeves are too long, covering most of the hands, the cuffs should stop just over the back of the palms and at the top of the thumbs. The coat should fit slim and quite tight, like the Supermad coat, which is to me is the most accurate overall. It also has the correct sleeve length with 3 of the 4 bodies I tried, 2 stock and 2 custom that I modified. That said, I found one trade off is that to achieve the correct height for Gosling, it probably makes the Supermad coat approx. a few mm too short (on the Supermad body and AT020). But I would rather have the correct height and more accurate, natural shoulder proportions, than not. And it doesn't really look that bad to me, or noticeable without direct comparison to the film. It was a similar case with Dark Toy's Deckard, swapping him over to a taller body, made him more realistic and height-accurate, but the stock DTs coat and trousers became slightly too short.

Some photos I had taken when analysing Gosling's trousers and leg proportions. But they also show the fit of the coat well, notice how it hugs the body, length and sleeve length. Photos taken in HDR, note:

Screenshot 2024-10-29 182443.jpgScreenshot 2024-10-29 182454.jpgScreenshot 2024-10-29 182645.jpgScreenshot 2024-10-29 183038.jpg

Now, it is obvious to me that if you increase the proportions of the Blackbox body, it will allow the coat to look more accurate, but then I think most sculpts will look undersized on it, so it is a Catch 22 with that figure. You can already see that the stock head looks slightly undersized with everything else stock. In contrast, one of the custom bodies I put together had an Hot Toys ANH chest, which was simply too bulky for the Supermad coat. But to my initial point above, I think such a body would suit the Blackbox coat better, but again, I think this may cause further issue with the head size.

Also, I would need to go back and check photos of my comparisons, but at least now on my AT020 (2024 version/ manufacture date), my Supermad coat doesn't look as skinny and tight as the one on the stock figure shared above. Also, it is worth noting that you can easily change the appearance and fit of at least the Supermad coat by tucking it in to the rear/ pinching.

For me, the most egregious thing about the stock Supermad body are the horrible shoulders, which make K's shoulders look like Tyrant from Resident Evil 3 with his collar up, but is especially noticeable with just his jumper on. I corrected this a lot with the more natural and sloped shoulders of the AT020, though in a relaxed pose/ posture, Gosling still has more sloped shoulders. I exemplified this in my writeup. As a trade-off however, the arms are slightly slimmer on the AT020, whereas the stock Supermad arms appear to be closer to Gosling's in the film. One frustration and thing I don't like about the AT020 is the lack of access to any screws to disassemble parts and mod the body.

20241026_182952.jpg20241028_184138.jpgqzysqpad58f81.jpg

With my last custom body test (Maha, Leto/ ANH and other), the jumper was screen accurate in length. It isn't on the AT020. The one thing not really possible with the necked sculpts is having the jumper neckline screen-accurate, since it is lower in the film and if we had a jumper like that, it would expose the neck and body join/ line. I use a thin undergarment for my outfit, which a. helped the jumper stay fully pulled down without raising back up at all when handling the figure and b. gave a very slight padding to the thighs, which helps.

I can't see the Blackbox trousers fully in the above photos but it looks good to me. I think the Supermad ones are very accurate albeit, to me, the lower legs look are a bit wider than the screen-worn trousers. You could maybe fix this with padding, but would then need to pad out the thighs more/ enough to compensate.

I detailed this in my writeup, but thus far, I have found that the AT020 has been the best and most accurate body for the Supermad outfit and Gosling's anatomy. I have one more DID body on the way but at this stage, I doubt I will take the outfit off again as I don't want any more wear and tear to it, especially the Velcro on the trousers, which always weakens with each use.

EDIT: I just thought about my shoulder comparison photos above and I realised that the broader shouldered and thicker armed stock Supermad body is what must be making the coat too slim and tight fitting. So, another plus for the AT020, I think, to bring it closer to screen-accuracy with a slightly looser yet still slim and close fit.

Good insights

By my approximation, the blackbox coat is a little wide, and the supermad is on the tighter end, whereas ideally, I think an accurate coat would fall somewhere inbetween.

Here you can go one of two ways.

You can try to tame the Blackbox coat as Steel Shields has done, and deal with a little extra bulk

Screenshot_20241113-161813_Instagram-02.jpeg

Or stick it out with the Supermad coat, and deal with a little tighter fit around the sides and the sleeves.

There's definitely some fluff to the coat though, so it's a matter of sticking to one extreme, and working with what you have.

Personally, I hope that more options are made available.

Yes, but as per my writeup above, you can more easily remedy that by applying the Supermad coat to a slimmer body, as I have done. Or, you can apply the Blackbox coat to a larger body, though as I said above, I am not sure what sculpts would work well with this. I do recall seeing one head that was larger, I think Threezero, but I don't like the look of it. Note that the screen-worn jacket has tight fitting sleeves.

Again, you don't need to stick to an extreme with modification, as per my writeup. In the above photo, Gosling is leaning with his right arm extended and left hand in pocket and to the rear-back a bit, thus you are seeing the jacket extended and fit looser and fanned out a bit.

Yes, the pictures show there's more volume to the coat which can be seen clearly when it spreads. There's more width to the sleeves, and looseness at his wrists. No amount of modding will fix that. But these are still third party coats we're talking about. That's to be expected.
