I wish they had some of the same characters though. In 1 was the guy with the hawk - and he was so bad ass.
Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford announced at PAX East today that the company's shoot-and-loot RPG Borderlands 2 will (almost definitely) have a fifth playable class, eventually.
It's called the Mechromancer. It's a young cyborg girl that can, apparently, control mechanized units including the D374-TP — AKA "Deathtrap." Pitchford said that the Mechromancer is at this stage of development a "new idea."
"It's a concept right now," Pitchford explained at today's Gearbox panel. "It doesn't exist yet." He showed drawings of a young, redheaded girl with pigtails and goggles. One of her arms was mechanical. Her companion Deathrap looked vaguely like a cross between the Claptrap mascot and a T-800 Terminator, patched together from various robot parts.
Pitchford says the Borderlands 2 team is committed to adding the Mechromancer to the game after the core game is finished. The class will be "post-launch DLC," hitting about two months or so after the game's launch in September.
"We're going to give it to you for free," he later added.
Gearbox also detailed the game's character customization, which features a color and decal editing system, unique and Weapons Manufacturer-specific skins and rare, collectible decorative heads that players can apply to their class of choice. Players of the original Borderlands will receive a unique head and skin for each class as a bonus.
Rather than a stock assortment of gear and costumes, players will have to earn their new wardrobes.
New gear, costume pieces, and even custom heads can be acquired by completing missions and challenges, as well as ranking up. In addition, players of the original Borderlands will immediately be rewarded with an exclusive head and skin.
The Mechromancer is yet to be developed, and will be made available as post-launch DLC. This female character seems to be a mix of human and machine, and can control a large robot known as D374-TP (Deathtrap). The character will be made available for free to those that pre-order the game. There is no ETA or pricing available for the Mechromancer yet, but Randy Pitchford said he hopes to price it at a level "comparable to most DLC."
Also announced was a special edition of the game that will retail for $149.99, and comes packaged in a loot box from the game. You can see the package, which includes a Marcus bobblehead and a copy of the game, below.

There will be two tiers of special editions. The "Deluxe Vault Hunters Edition" at $99, gets a Marcus Kincaid bobble head. He's the weapons supplier with the lothario accent who narrates the first game. The second, an "Ultimate Loot Chest Edition" (pictured above) delivers you a stylized Borderlands loot chest with all the goodies packed inside. It doesn't open up with hydraulics—it's more like a jewelry box, but it matches a community suggestion as best it could. More goodies and premiums in both editions will be announced later.
