Can a Sequel ever be better than the Original?

Dude, sequels are often better then the originals.

X:2
Spider-man 2
Rocky 2
Batman: The Dark Knight
Superman II (reeves)

Many many movie series hit thier peak with the second film. The first films test the water. The second films dive in. Then the third film usually falters because they try to out-do the second film, only to cram too much into one movie and dilute the plot enough that the movie sufferes (i.e. Spider-Man 3).

Better
The Dark Knight (though I've grown to love Begins)
The Empire Strikes Back
X-Men 2
Wrath of Khan

Equal
Spider-Man 2
Terminator 2: Judgement Day

The Dark Knight
Empire Strikes Back
Hellboy 2
X-men 2
Spiderman 2
Batman Returns - debatable for some
T2
Toy Story 2
28 Weeks Later
Leathal Weapon 2 - again debatable for some

Better
The Dark Knight (though I've grown to love Begins)
The Empire Strikes Back
X-Men 2
Wrath of Khan

Equal
Spider-Man 2
Terminator 2: Judgement Day

Thats a good distinction to make. But I think Wrath of Khan is a poor example since the first film wasn't exactly hard to beat!

better

Empire Strikes Back
Spiderman 2
TDK

equal

Aliens
X2

not as good but still worthy

T2

As a general answer I would say it is evidently very difficult to resurrect old franchises after many years have elapsed and make a worthy sequel. Those filmmakers, even if they themselves are the originators, tend to forget what made the original film or films great in the first place.

I watched five minutes of The Road Warrior...it's badass.....but my cable box f'ed up so I couldnt finish it....

Anyway...TDK is the only one I can think of. I cant pick between T1 and T2....nor can I pick between Alien and Aliens.

(Even though it seems like i'm being hypocritical, i'm still saying this...)

How can ANYONE think AvP-R is even somewhat better then AvP? AvP is crap...but atleast the story makes a bit of sense, atleast there was some attempt at character development, atleast the fights were engaging, and visually interesting....AvP-R looks and feels like a Sci Fi movie of the week. There is not ONE good thing in that movie...well the music...but aside from that, it's ^^^^.

People like it better because the Predator was this uber badass god who made a mockery of the Aliens....

Rant over.

AvP:R?

Maybe I'm wrong but I would have thought the OPs intention was to talk about sequels to GOOD films. But I suppose fair enough if the likes of AvP and Star trek: the motion picture were good in ones own opinion.
