Can a Sequel ever be better than the Original?

I really didn't like TDK as much as Batman Begins (no where close actually)
But T2 and Aliens stand out the most (And I'm 100 percent sure they have been mentioned a thousand times already)

Only at SSF can people get caught up in debates over the AVP films and whether Wolf Predator is cool or not and in the very same thread someone says THE LAST CRUSADE is better than RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and no one even blinks an eye. This place is fooked! :lol

Wolf sucks ass...and is THE dumbest Predator of all. Would you go up agaisnt 12 lions with a machete....?

Did it a couple of times, it isn't that hard...You just have to show them who's boss :D :monkey3

Following the discussion so far, I have to say that I don't think AVP-R is better than AVP. Like CelticP said before, AVP did try to have a better story and characters.
I have seen AVP-R only once, at the time it was in the theaters, but I still remember that there wasn't any character at all which I found likeable. I was just waiting to see who would die next and in what way...

The film did have a very cool scene though;

In the hospital when Wolf throws his shuriken through the hallway, kills 2 aliens and pins that girl to the wall. All with a single throw.

I found that really showed the strength of a Predator...

But both those movies are pretty lame

But, back on the actual topic:

X-Men 2

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban

Empire Strikes Back
From Russia with love
X-Men 2
All the Harry Potter sequels are better than the first one, but Azkaban is the best
Toy Story 2
Spiderman 2
Godfather part 2
Meet the F o c k ers
The Dark Knight, but just by a fraction as I love begins
Superman 2, Once again, just by a fraction
Evil Dead 2
I would put The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, but I'm not sure if you could call it a proper sequel.

Ha. Ha. Jerk.

A sequel CAN be better.. but more times than not the sequel usually sucks. Just because a lot of times the sequel is only made to cash in and doesn't really have an actual story or anything new to add: Crank 2, Caddyshack II, The Exorcist II, Son of the Mask, Speed 2, Dumb and Dumberer, Basic Instinct 2, American Psycho 2, Poltergeist 2, Blues Brothers 2000, Conan the Destroyer, etc.

I agree with most on this list as a sequel being better than the original.

I wouldn't add Conan the Destroyer to that list. It was a different story and wasn't trying to be like the first movie. It was closer to Conan than the first movie was.

As has been mentioned, ESB, Spider Man 2 and X-Men 2. Alien and Aliens are different but equally great. And both Terminators are pretty equal.

Not trying to be like the first movie, ok. I agree. They made it more goofy and kid friendly. Doesn't change the fact that it was made to cash in on the success of the first movie. And it doesn't change the fact that it was a failure both commercially (grossing less domestically at the box office) and critically. Most fans of the first film (myself included) were disappointed with it to say the least. It's not really a bad movie.. but compared to the original yeah it sucks.

And!? Batman Forever and Batman & Robin were closer to the original Batman comics than Batman (1989) Batman Returns, Batman Begins AND The Dark Knight. Does that make those Joel Schumaker films better somehow!?

I think there are a lot of sequels that are better than the original if they are part of a trilogy and the qaulity is consistant. Usually, the second act of a play is the best. It has crazy plot developments, character development and has a faster pace. Same with with the middle entries in trilogies.

How about the third film in a trilogy being better than the first two: Only one I can think of was Army Of Darkness. Any others!?
