Re: Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier

I'll tell you, but, since there are two after-credits scenes, first things first:

1.)Do you know who the Winter Soldier is?

2.) Do you care if I tell you who he is?
I'm well awake of who he is, read the comics. I was actually rather surprised that his identity was a secret/spoiler to begin with. Thought it was obvious from the trailer alone and the cast listing for the movie reveals it.

Re: Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier

Well, then, here we go:

1.) Baron Von Strucker's is talking to a scientist about various mad Hydra science stuff, like "blah, blah, blah, potential, etc." As he talks, he says something along the lines of "we have this," and we see he has Loki's staff from the first Avengers film. He and his science buddy proceed to walk and talk. As they make their way through a bunker full of other nefarious Hydra people doing other nefarious Hydra things, we hear Strucker talk about "the twins," and how we're living in "the age of miracles," as he does so, we see two people in cells.

One of whom is Quicksilver; he's got long hair and a beard (no white hair, though), and he's shirtless, and bouncing around the room at super-speed (like Luke's laser when he tried to shoot the trash compactor in "A New Hope"). In the cell next to him is Scarlet Witch; she's basically wearing the same get-up that we've seen her wearing in set pics, but she's suiting cross legged on the floor, and gazing at a couple of children's alphabet blocks in wonder, as they hover above her hands; she makes a fist and they explode, and that's the end of that.

2.) We revisit the "Captain America" exhibit at the Smithsonian; as we are going through it, we're following an over the shoulder perspective of a dude in a trucker cap, with a backpack going through. He comes to the "James Barnes" memorial, and the camera pans to reveal that it's Bucky, and he's seemingly on the road to recovery (finding out what happened to all those years he missed).

Re: Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier

Couldn't agree more Batfan. The action is fast and packed in, but its the great performances put in that really made this movie. Redford...no surprise there, but Mackie was an unkown to me and he really impressed me. It didn't feel like Captain America... and some dudes that follow him around, it really had a feel of comrades in arms. And it was realy gut wrenching...

Having Bucky picking Cap apart with those shots at the end. I was literally wanting to jump out of my seat and yell, "Stop it you ****!" :lol

Both sound great. I'm happy that the first one

involves characters to tie into AOU. Sounds like the set pictures we've seen of Quicksilver and Scarlet are based around a scene where they perhaps escape the facility with the help of Hawkeye and run around using their powers.

Also I hope we get Bucky back down the MCU road. With Chris wanting to step down from being Cap in the future, it would be great if he passed down the mantle of being Cap onto Bucky like the way he did in the comics.

Re: Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier

The first big fight between Cap and WS was mind blowing with how the sound effects and music were presented.

Battle looked great even when Cap was in street clothes.

This movie rocks.

Everyone in my theater went crazy during that scene

I missed the last Smithsonian scene--gotta watch this movie again!

Re: Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier

Ahh. Didn't catch that. Thanks!:hi5:

You're welcome my friend. It actually is a very meaningful reference when you think about what went on with both Cap and Fury during the film.

Great review batfan! :clap Now you need to change your username to "capfan"

Honestly, this is perhaps one of the strongest Marvel studios movies to date. It was intense, interesting and in my opinion, did a good job of interweaving some characterization in-between the action sequences. Perhaps one of the strongest points of the film was the DIALOGUE. Previous reviews have pointed it out and for a comic book movie, it's sharp and well-done with excellent moments of humor and wit. While I love "The Avengers", some of the dialogue was corny and too forced "comic-booky" ("I have red in my ledger"...), none of that here, "The Winter Soldier" grounds it with a hint of realism and strong performances by the entire cast.

batfan pretty much nailed it with his character descriptions, but I wanted to touch on one thing. This is a Ed Brubaker/Steve Epting CAPTAIN AMERICA comic come to life. You can see their work has strongly influenced this movie (with nothing stronger than "The Winter Soldier" character himself, who was "created" by those two) and if you've been a fan of their work on previous "Captain America" comics, you'll love this movie.

Another thing is that Marvel has slowly groomed the audience to become more comfortable with their futuristic "pseudo-technological advance" modern society. Any fan of Marvel will know that objects like Helicarriers, Holographic communications/disguises, Hovering Quinjets, cyborg arms, etc. etc. are a "normal" thing in the everyday Marvel Universe. In movies however, to just throw them in there would be a shock to the audience in my opinion. However, over the course of the movies they have slowly introduced that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a highly technical world which is still grounded with some reality. The excess of helicarriers and quinjets here did not strike me as strange at all and neither did the large presence of SHIELD in the world thanks to Marvel's nurturing hand of this technology and organizations over the course of several movies. This goes back to comments I've seen before that part of Marvel studios own movie success is they have fully "embraced" the comic book roots and try not to stray far too much into the dimension of realism (like "The Dark Knight" trilogy).

Future Predictions:

I think they are going to do the "Death of Captain America" storyline. They dropped several hints here and there and combining that with the backstage news we've heard, it seems evident.

-Agent Sharon Carter joining the CIA and making perfect shots. She is the one that "shoots" Cap in the story while under hypnosis. I really wish we saw more of her, but perhaps we will in the sequel as she is a VERY prominent supporting cast member/love interest in the Captain America comics.

-Brock Rumlow surviving, albeit scarred and wounded heavily. For those who don't know, though he is a SHIELD Strike team member in the movie, Brock Rumlow is actually a HUGE Captain America villain in the comics known as "Crossbones". He is a recurring associate of the Red Skull and is actually is the one who "kills" Cap in the storyline. He could very well adapt the "Crossbones" moniker in the next film and work alongside the villains to seek revenge.

-Arnim Zola surviving in computer form. Similar to the comics, Zola "lives" to the modern era from WW2 by putting his consciousness into a computer (robot body in the comics). If he survived, perhaps the Red Skull did in a way too?...At least his consciousness could...much like he had in the comics using the Cosmic cube. Red Skull is the main architect behind the "Death of Captain America" and he sort of "dissolves" in The First Avenger, leaving the potential that he isn't really dead and merely "ascended" in a way to pave for his potential return. Another potential villain is Skull's daughter, Sin.

-Sebastian Stan has revealed he has signed a 9-picture deal with Marvel studios and Chris Evans wraps up his Marvel contract (six pictures) after the Avengers 3 (with his last two FULL films before that being Avengers 2 & Captain America 3). This effectively lends HUGE implications that Marvel wants to go with the "Bucky Cap" route that they have in the comics. Assuming Rogers doesn't "bite the dust" in Cap 3 or Avengers 3, it's likely he could be paid nicely to have a large "supporting role" in Captain America 4 which might allow him to "pass the torch". Evans has also said he wants to "retire from acting and start directing" after he is done with his Marvel movies.

This film is loaded with performances that are pitch perfect and pack emotional resonance that just wallop you while you sit there watching. And still I come back to two that just hit me hard and brought tears...
Cap's visit with Peggy Carter and Cap's final confrontation with Bucky and Cap trying desperately to make him remember who he is. The words, the faces of the actors just devastating those sequences.

I don't know how Whedon tops this next summer. He's gotta bring what he did with those very best episodes of Buffy and Firefly, the ones that stay with you forever, to make Age of Ultron even on the same par as TWS.

Re: Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier

Maybe Whedon should be kicked to the curb and the Russo bros. should do Avengers 3 :rock

Absolutely, and I'm glad you touched on Brubaker's run. I've read some of it, but I really just want to sit down and read everything from Issue 1 to the very end, and so, with that in mind, I wasn't going to presume to attest to the legitimacy of it as an adaptation, when I, myself, wasn't familiar enough with it to draw those conclusions.:lol

You've got to batfan. Bru's run is genius. And thank you for that fantastic review.

Re: Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier

From what I read, I really want to, but I was borrowing the omnibuses from a buddy of mine, and, unfortunately, he gave me "The Death of Captain America" Omni first; my brain kind of shut down and refused to read it because I wanted to start at issue 1.:lol
