I think I agree with you DA. Do you have a picture of a sculpt that you can post so I know what I'm shooting for?

Hot Toys Thor & Art Figures Gunnar are great examples of blonde hair:

Ok, i see now...many thanks!

Re: Classic Actors & Tough Guys - Bogart, Cagney, Wayne, Eastwood, Dean & Others...

I prefer the the yellow-ish one but like DA mention, it's too yellow! haha.

Remember his hair is proper blonde, bordering on being bleach blonde where Thor and Lundgren on those figures are more of a dirty blonde! ;)

That is true, but to build depth in the hair you need a darker color. To get a bleach effect I think a few washes of a raw & burnt sienna mix would work. Giving it that orange brown look at the base. Then just dry brush the lighter cream color throughout the hair. I think the yellow could be used too, but in very little amounts for highlights.

Example pic of the look I'm picturing for Brando's color in that movie. I could be wrong though :lol

Re: Classic Actors & Tough Guys - Bogart, Cagney, Wayne, Eastwood, Dean & Others...

Thanks guys...good points...well, I will give it another try. My thoughts are to use DA's technique but then also add a bit more light grey as the pics of him show more of a bleached look. Very little if any dark undertone. I didn't think this would be as challenging as it has turned out. I've been pretty good with brown and other dark hair layers. This blonde has thrown me for a loop...fun though!

I will continue to rely on your thoughts though, if that's ok...(oh gosh, what am I saying :) :) :))

I think you will get there buddy, just keep slapping paint on top of the hs. My ideas could be totally wrong for the color you want; so just go with what makes you happy :wink1:

Haha, I would imagine that Pitt picture is how Brando's would have been.

You know the old story...if you put a monkey in front of a typewriter (gosh, should be keyboard now!), eventually he will type something! Ha, same here (maybe)..

Ok, at least you could have waited to see updated pictures before posting that Lol!!

Re: Classic Actors & Tough Guys - Bogart, Cagney, Wayne, Eastwood, Dean & Others...

Interesting excercise! It started out as a fun endeavor and the more I kept at it, the farther away I would get..

What I did was start out with a dark base (notice the dark burnt sienna color in the top left) and started to layer the colors (working my way down the left side of my painting tray) to the lighter colors. The problem with this sculpt is that it has too many patches and breaks of hair (not like the straight examples posted by DA). I would find brushing, dry brushing, sponging (tried that too) would still leave the yellow hues in little nooks that just didn't look right. Even if I used very little yellow it would stand out too much. I ended up with where I'm at now. It's better than the pure gray that I used the first time and better than the yellow look I had second try. Right in between. I am going to smooth out those golden hues you see... I'm happy...

Ok, DA, now you can post a picture of a bigger monkey :)!

Re: Classic Actors & Tough Guys - Bogart, Cagney, Wayne, Eastwood, Dean & Others...

I finally got back to this thread, but I'm surprised nobody else did. I don't think the hair looks blonde, but if your happy with it, then that is all that matters :)
I think you should give it another shot, but try a grey base coat this time and add cream/yellow on top. Stay away from brown. That might give you the look that your shooting for. It should turn out similar to this hs.

Re: Classic Actors & Tough Guys - Bogart, Cagney, Wayne, Eastwood, Dean & Others...

Thanks DA! Although I said I was happy above, I really wasn't and I have kept fiddling with it. In fact, I did what you recommended, using a light grey base than used a very light tan. Seems to be better. I will post pictures in the coming days. One thing is for sure...no browns or yellows can be used. Yellow (no matter how light) kills it. I've tried creating a light tan wash and have slowly been applying it...let's see.

Thanks again for your help and comments. I've learned about about what doesn't work with this excercise :)

Re: Classic Actors & Tough Guys - Bogart, Cagney, Wayne, Eastwood, Dean & Others...

Well, I snapped two pics real quick to show you where I'm at...thoughts? I'm thinking if I add a real light, extremely thinned out white wash, or some tiny white highlights, I might get to your picture above. Believe it or not, there is no yellow used at all in these pics...!

Your on track. That looks so much better. I think with your added washes, then it will be done soon :hi5:

I'm telling you, I'll be glad this one is over :). I'm glad Duke wasn't blonde!!
