The mutation thing was not confirmed, just speculation and is probably b.s. The rest with the satellite, Slusho and the monster hibernating has been confirmed as Michael pointed out.

Yep, I just read through the link. I have a better understanding now.

Still not sure how a little satellite "wakes" a monster that size under thousands of feet of pressure. But there really wasn't any mention of that in what I read. Maybe coincidence.

Perhaps the oil tanker was conducting a salvage operation for the satellite or they were deep sea mining for the secret ingredient of Slusho which woke the monster?

Wife and I saw it over the weekend, really had to wrangle her to come see it with me, other than Peter Jackson's King Kong, she is always less then impressed by the "Godzilla" like horror movies. We had of course seen the trailers and she was always asking why is it called "Cloverfield," I never had an answer for her but always told her it was produced by JJ Abrahms and since she loved Alias and is a big lost fan that pretty much sold her on it.

After watching it, she was less them impressed, the shaky cam did her in, She pretty much said the only good thing was it was told from the average joe's view as opposed to the hero who saves the world.

I thought it was pretty good on the other hand, a hugh improvement over the recent Godzilla film, acting was good, really enjoyed the no name cast, thought the person on the street view was a great idea. It wasn't academy award winning by any means, but a good enjoyable monster film with a couple of semi new twists... I only hope they do not do a sequel :)

I wish I had stayed to the end of the credits as well :(

The Wife and I just came back from this and man.... I loved it. It was scary and intense, just as it should have been. I don't really think if I had been in the situation that I would have made the same choices... But I still loved the film.

The monster was also exceptionally well thought out. It didn't feel cheesy or stupid at all. In fact, I was pretty tense and on the edge of my seat for the entire movie. Especially the firefight outside the subway and at the chopper rendezvous.

And thank you for this link... it helped explain a LOT for my Wife and myself.

This is the best compilation of info I've seen:

I'm such a sap. I definitely would have gone back after the girl. :monkey3

I think, had it been me.... If it were my Wife... I'd go back for her. But I wouldn't if it were just my GF. :lol

Not when there is a HUGE ass monster in the city. My survival instinct is too intense...

Just got back from seeing it and it was great. Any of the little p&ssies who got motion sickness from this movie, that's just pathetic. I'm suprised how they even walk around during daily life, it wasn't all that shakey. ANYWAY, you saw a lot more of the "monster" than I thought you were going to see. I was only expecting a few frames of it, but was surpised when you saw a good portion of it.

Does anybody else think that this would have been a GREAT Godzilla movie is the horrible '97 movie wasn't made. Think of it, there hasn't been a Godzilla movie in a long time and BOOM, instead of the creature, they have Gozilla. I can't imagine how awesome it would be; but I digress.

I never saw any of the viral marketing before, so I'm going to have to start looking into that. I didn't even see the "satellite" crash at the end nor did I stay for the credits. might go see it again to see both these parts.

I agree, that is so lame, I just looked at those people and shook my head.

I loved that about it, I honestly thought were only going to get small glimpses of it, but was pleasantly surprised by how much we got.

I would've preferred 100% for it to have been Godzilla, but I'm glad that it wasn't something lame, it would have been awesome though.

Dusty was correct. The box office fell by 70% for the weekend for this film. That is one very big drop off. I would guess that the demographic which is the target aduience has already seen it and those who are not in that specific demographic have little or no interest in seeing it. In show business terms - the film has no legs.

It doesn't matter. The Opening week was huge enough to ensure that the film is a huge hit. Also, it out-performed analyst expectations by $20+ million on its opening weekend and set MLK weekend records. There was no doubt it would see a huge drop after that.

Plus the film made back its budget and then some and since marketing wasn't super heavy for this film they didn't have to worry about making back a huge advertising budget.

Yea, seeing as thought the finals words played backwards are: "it's still alive" I would enjoy a sequel; I enjoyed the film a lot

I don't think you can really say a movie "has no legs" when it's at #4 in week 2, and it's only $6 million behind the #1 movie.
