I hate almost every team in the SEC but it's not hard to recognize talent and competition. Oregon is one of the teams I pull for but I know they wouldn't beat Alabama (who I hate). There are no doubt people like you mention but I'd be willing to put big money down on it being a very small group.

Well, then they're most certainly one of the most vocal groups.

For the record, I've never considered you among the group I'm mentioned. You're actually cultured. :lol

Yeah that **** is weird, when they don't have a connection with a school and they act like its their alma mater. I'm sure other schools are bad but I can definitely speak on some UGA fans.

Having lived in the Atlanta area for 30+ years I can definitely attest that much of this SEC cheerleader stuff absolutely has as much to do with "Southern pride" as anything else. They put almost as much emphasis on wanting the conference to win as their own school. They want to be better than the damn Yankee schools up North and the West Coasters. It's borne of an overall inferiority complex that has been palpable here since the outcome of the Civil War. Annoys the **** out of me. There is no more myopia in sports than fans and journalists following these southern teams.

The SEC does a good job of bringing in the best coaches and assistants and I think they pay top dollar for it. It seems to work as you can see by the product they put on the field. Also, how many kids that grew up in the south really want to go play football up north or out west unless they get passed up by the southern schools? I would think it's much easier to convince a kid to come south that played HS football where it gets really cold in the winter.

I don't see it as any different than professional sports where fans pull for a team even though they have never been a part of the organization. I grew up in Ohio as a Buckeye fan since I was a kid, but I didn't go to OSU because it was too close to home and I wanted to branch out a bit. That didn't change my support for the Buckeyes though.

Yeah, and some states in the south don't have professional football teams, so college teams are a proxy for that. But ultimately, it is just another form of "nationalism," and the connection can be arbitrary. I never cared for college as a kid, but lots of kids I went to school with were LSU fans as well as Saints fans. I'm sure it doesn't only happen in the south, like your Ohio example.

And some of what you guys are saying about southern fans of college football is true, but I also observe a lot of sour grapes/frustration that feeds into criticism of the SEC and its fans, considering that they have clearly been dominant for the last several years.
