Can anyone in this thread recommend some good hotels/motels in SD. I've never been to SD before and this will hopefully be my 1st Comic-Con just trying to sort out Accomodation and flights from Scotland and back now.

And would it better to try and get a hotel near to the Convention centre or not?

Thanks for any help guys.

Ditto on this for me as well. Last year was my first Con, and for moetary reasons and other obligations, we weren't able to book a hotel until fairly late in the game and ended up staying at a nice, but out of town hotel and riding the train for an hour each day.

We're going to fly this year instead of driving, and would love to stay closer to the convention center...of course. Also, I was a bit confused by ordering hotels through Comic-Con's site last year though...do they reserve a large block of rooms and hotels until springtime and then make them available just to con goers? Is it worth waiting for that offer, or better to book now?

My advice is to book now if you want a close hotel.

It's almost impossible to book a room when they release rooms in February. Try checking all of the hotel websites and see if they have any rooms available. Most hotels are already sold out or only have rooms that they save for the Con release in February. My friend has decided to come next year and I've been looking for a room for him for weeks and still can't find anything within walking distance.

Just 2 years ago it was $50 for the 4 day pass if you bought early. This year it was up to $75. And people thought Sideshow price jumped fast! The cost DOUBLED in 2 years. Even if it is still a good deal, I can't help but feel ripped off. And this year there seemed to be even MORE people and I got into even LESS things I wanted. I fail to see why I was charged 50% more for a worse experience than then the year before. I can understand charging more if they let less people attend, but that clearly wasn't the case.

IMO, you're right. It is a rip off. I wouldn't mind a reason for such a 50% increase.

It may have been me, PN and Thursday seemed really packed, while Friday and Saturday seemed pretty tamed compaired to years past.

I'd like to see them rotate it between East coast and West coast.

Well, you do have NYCC. Get more people to come and more exibitors and guests will show. It's labeled as the SDCC of the east.

I'll feel real confident I'm finally getting there once I book a hotel, I think I'll see about wrapping that part of this up this weekend.

Hotels don't charge you until you actually go there and stay right, up front it's just a reservation.

Sadly, because it's a special event week, most charge up front at the time of reservation. I'm cringing at my credit card bill next month.

And hey East Coasters - there's NYCC.

Darn, I'll have to hold off on booking a hotel for a bit if that's the case.

I got really lucky last year with a great deal. And while I'm a lot closer this year, I also had to pay twice as much. :(
Hotels are def the big ^^^^^ when going to sdcc. I should just move out there at some point.

I'm still bummed I waited to get my ticket until after the preview night sold out. Not a huge loss, but I dunno why I was stupid and didn't get it at the con last year.

I just booked mine. I'm 11 miles away, in Cholla Vista. Hopefully that is only like a 15 minute drive and I REALLY hope the train hits Cholla Vista.

Hotel I used this past year jacked their rate up almost double, guess they got wise to the nerd crew coming annually. Not surprised because that hotel was more crowded with con goers than it was the year before.

Still cost me $430 for Wed night through Sat Night after using all my CC reward points. I don't remember it costing this much last year, but I'd probably just forgotten. It's funny cause while searching for hotel rooms, it says "avg night = $60-$90" but still turns out by being $140 a night after all is said and done.

Anyone comment on Cholla Vista area? Cab ride to downtown Gaslight district cost?

Cool, thanks. Reviews seemed good to average, so I'm happy and don't mind the scenery change at all. All I need is a place to crash and then make it to the con in relatively short amount of time, and as I've learned, hopefully without having to drive at all.

One more thing, and then I'll be off. Stumbled across this google ad while trying to book the hotel, and it caught my attention. Thought I'd share.

After looking at hotels, I may just stick to the hotel we stayed in last year in El Cajon, it's a few miles out of town...but since the only options seem to be paying out the nose or staying a few miles out of town...I'll go with B. A few miles is a few miles, whether it's 5 or 15, you're not walking and you're gonna be driving or riding the train, so may as well try to find the best price.

The place in El Cajon we stayed in was a good price, even though we booked in May, so maybe we'll do better this year...and it was just a two minute drive to the train station.

Edit: Also, it really sucks how hotels can be so sleazy and opportunistic like this. I mean, I get why they do it of course...but other areas of commerce can't do this, can't take advantage of customers completely at their mercy.

it's done all the time. Have you seen prices of popular concert tickets? He'll, SDCC itself did it by jacking up cost of tickets another $25. Demand is getting huge, maybe too big.

I understand that it does happen, but what I'm saying is that other areas have regulations and rules against price gouging. Most of us go through daily life with encounters where someone could certainly take advantage of your needs but you know what to expect and aren't worried. One gets accustomed to certain behaviors and expectations. So it sucks anytime when you're doing something unusual to your routine and faced with the odd incident where it happens. But I guess until we have a federal government hotel agency, it's here to stay.
