After looking at hotels, I may just stick to the hotel we stayed in last year in El Cajon, it's a few miles out of town...but since the only options seem to be paying out the nose or staying a few miles out of town...I'll go with B. A few miles is a few miles, whether it's 5 or 15, you're not walking and you're gonna be driving or riding the train, so may as well try to find the best price.

Smart move IMO. I live in El Cajon and if you're renting a car it's not that far out of the way

I understand that it does happen, but what I'm saying is that other areas have regulations and rules against price gouging. Most of us go through daily life with encounters where someone could certainly take advantage of your needs but you know what to expect and aren't worried. One gets accustomed to certain behaviors and expectations. So it sucks anytime when you're doing something unusual to your routine and faced with the odd incident where it happens. But I guess until we have a federal government hotel agency, it's here to stay.

Even though I'm a capitalist price gouging is one area that I eish was enforced. Try living in AZ when there is a gas shortage.

It really was a great place. We completely lucked into a pretty nice hotel, waiting until pretty late in the game. Buying completely blind, we were a bit nervous about ending up in a skeezy hotel, in a sketchy town or neighborhood, but El Cajon was a great city.

However, last night, I found an absolutely killer deal in Ocean Beach. Cheaper than any place in El Cajon or La Mesa, and couldn't pass up being just a few miles from the convention center. It's just a couple minutes from Sea World, close to the airport and just a short drive to the trolley station to ride to and from the convention. Just an amazing location for the price.

I don't know if there's any protocol against this..but if you haven't booked your room yet, look into the Heritage Inn San Diego. I only came across it at Booking.com.
