Just had to learn it the hard way, man. I still fight off temptations for new things, but whatever comes home needs to strike a powerful chord in me, long after the novelty has worn off. Every single piece in my collection should be a tangible manifestation of my tastes, memories, and nostalgia.

A few pointers:

Don't buy stuff "just because it was a good deal" - get it because you WANT it!
Don't allow anything to "sneak" into your shelf. ;)
Don't buy inferior versions of what you have (getting the Maul mini-bust when you have the 1:1)
Don't clutter, hoard, speculate
Don't over-analyze

Do's
Round up similar pieces together to make it easier on the eyes.
Less is more.
Have fun. :)

Well said bud!

I would also add:

Don't buy just because everyone else has one

Good point! My problem has been though that I see other people's pics of statues and I'm like DANG! That is way cooler than I thought it would be...then I want it. I have to say that I LOVE all my pieces. Absolutely LOVE them!! I admire them on almost a daily basis and continue to get blown away...or notice a small detail that I had overlooked before. Just the other day I took down my Old Western GR to post pics of it for a thread and just fell even more in love with the piece as I looked at all the cool flames coming from the back of the duster....Fortunately I have only bought pieces I really wanted to have...rather than what everyone else had or else I would have gone for an IM comiquette or X-men vs. Sentinel....thankfully I don't really care for either of them and it was easy to say no thank you. :)

Oh the X-Men Vs. Sentinel :drool If you ever did go after that one I know you wouldn't regret it.

Also Jen, the Punisher is seriously worth every penny. Ok I will stop now because I don't want to get you into trouble. :)

See if I bought the first Xmen Vs piece..then I would need to get the other 2 and I just don't have the room or wallet for them. I actually prefer PFs rather than pieces with several characters. So I am safe for now!! :lol

I could have gotten a Punisher for $200...but I passed.....It is a fine looking statue but it was either him or Hellboy and to me that was a very easy choice to make because I am so loving the Hellboy right now. :monkey5

Collecting statues is fairly recent for me. I started collecting late, last fall and winded up getting quite a few statues/replicas within that time (PF's of Luke, Leia, Han, Darth, Ben and the Jaws Maquette (plus my Hellboy PF & Master Replicas Kermit). I didn't really know what I was getting myself into. I just started seeing pieces that were really catching my eye, which similarly caught my attention to this site where there are other collectors who have similar interest in this hobby.

I have more of an appreciation for the work that goes into these statues and I really admire & appreciate all of the collections I've seen. The time and money that you've put into something you love is something truly special. It's one of the reasons I got into this hobby.

The key is that I buy only what I can afford. I have yet to purchase any item with any of my credit cards. I save purchases for debit expenses only. That way I control my spending habits better...plus I don't leave myself in debt (I don't owe anything on any of my credit cards...except I used one of them to purchase a new puppy for my house). Another thing, and it's not a knock on Sideshow, but I've gotten some great deals on the statues that I own that were well below what they would normally sell on their site by purchasing from dealers and the local comic book shop.

I try to be patient with new items. If something falls through or sells out. It's no big deal. I don't worry about if an item is going to sell eventually for over a grand. I buy what I like, that way their are no regrets later on...
