Creature Commandos - HBO Max (First DCU entry)

Blue beetle. Sigh. I forgot they did that movie. They really made such a ok movie to such a great character. And he looked great imo.

Blue Beetle was a fun watch. Funny though the movie is 100% just a reskin of the first Shazam movie. Watching it I completely forgot how Night Owl from Watchmen is actually the OG Blue Beetle right down to Archie/The Bug.

As for Creature Commandos, it was fun. I didn't expect that last death, but yea, it was sad. But yea, this was a fun series.

On the subject of Gunn, the Comedian was essentially Peacemaker!

Ted Kord Beetle is one of my favorite all-time comic characters, and I have been disappointed by the fact that in both animated and live action worlds DC has gone with the young alien hybrid Beetle over the Kord version. Even in the Brave and the Bold cartoon. But with Gunn we may very well see him, as we are supposedly getting a Booster Gold series, and we already are getting Guy Gardner.

Ted Kord didn't show in the movie, but hinted for a sequel. They had his 'batcave' and showed his suit that was perfect!

As for Booster, man, they should have cast Glenn Powell. He would have been perfect! He also had a bit part in TDKR. During the stock exchange part, he is the one that Bane slams his head down on a keyboard lol.

Yeah, that was great. Similarly, in the Brave and the Bold cartoon they talk about Kord as a great hero and inspiration, and his ship is still around as I remember, but the only character who actually gets stories is Jaime Reyes. I appreciate that they gave attention to a Latino hero, but it's a shame that it all comes out of a stupid move in the comics to kill off Kord just to build hype for a pretty lame and forgettable comic series (retconning and ruining the character of Maxwell Lord in the process).

And that's a good call on casting Booster. 10 years ago Nathan Fillion would have been perfect. 20-30 years ago Bruce Campbell!

I know they say audiences are more sophisticated nowadays than they used to be, and I think there is some truth to that. But still, I think casual viewers are going to be very confused by this.

Casual viewers did not watch those other movies. If they had, we would not be getting a reboot.

Are you basing that on box office because James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad was given away for free on HBO Max the same day that it premiered in the theater. It had a box office total of roughly $168,700,000, which isn’t great, but that’s also because it was given away for free to HBO Max on the same day. I don’t know how accurate HBO Max’s numbers are that they release, but from what I could find, The Suicide Squad played in 4.7 million households, the first three weekends that it was on HBO Max.

I think the only other DCEU title that I mentioned in my last point was Peacemaker. The Peacemaker series had a somewhat modest premiere, but by the series finale, its viewership had increased by 44%. Which was record setting. My point being that surely with those numbers, someone was watching.

I guess we’ll see. I will say this, all of the mainstream DC super hero characters seem to have been recast. Maybe that will be enough to avoid confusion.

The only other thing that makes me wonder though, is there was really no significant break between the end of the DCEU and the start of the DCU. I think that could also potentially confuse people who don’t follow this stuff closely.

With both Gunn's Suicide Squad and Creature Commandos the viewer jumps right into an existing world with these characters and situations, and from my POV you really don't need to know much about any existing movies or shows to have a fully rewarding experience. You get all you need from the movies and shows themselves. I suspect Superman will be the same. If it is good and works then audiences will get behind it.
