If you follow nothing but various news outlets, you'll see nothing but news.
The website is the worst of all. Third-party mobile clients are the only saving grace, but they're being limited severely in an attempt to kill them off. It doesn't matter who you follow, you're not getting news, you're getting 140 characters. Maybe a link to a news article. So it works as a notification system, great, that's the use I've always agreed with, a 1-way fountain, a centralized alternative to RSS. But centralized is a huge problem for many reasons, not the least of which is availability, or for that matter control by a company that has goals in complete opposition of its installed user base.
And because so many people and companies use it in different ways, without third-party clients and their features, it gets very difficult very quickly to control the amount of noise.
It makes for a bad social platform and suffers some of the same inane traps as more conventional sites, the building of contacts as a scoring system among them.
As a technology it's very easy to displace, the factor preventing someone coming in right now and cleaning them out is brand loyalty. But I suspect that's going to start on a downward trajectory once they really start cooking their monetization schemes.
