Not really. I'll give you GN's but with TPBs, they're gouging there too. Instead of including the whole story, nowadays, they minimize them to 4 issues which don't complete the story arc, still charge the same price, and release the story over several volumes. Same ____, just a little cheaper.

The Essential Marvel stuff, 25 issues, b&w on newsprint, are a great value at 15 ea. Still, I know what you mean. Everything seems to be 'pay more, get less'....

Brubaker left the book several issues back - right after Marvel altered the numbering of the book to celebrate the 500th issue of Daredevil. (See explanation above.) It's being written by Matt Fraction now ... and it's suffering for it. The one-two punch of Bendis and Brubaker left the character reeling, and no one else was up to the task of effectively continuing the tale of Matt Murdock. We've instead been left with an over-the-top plot device (Daredevil takes over leadership of The Hand, becomes evil, etc.) that attempts to keep long-time, die-hard readers like me with its massive amounts of testosterone-laden melodrama. Pure shock therapy for readers that doesn't leave a lasting impression.

In short, it doesn't work. :gah: I'm ready to walk the comic book plank.

Bleh, that really sucks. Bendis and Brubaker worked miracles on that book. Hopefully Brubaker wrote enough issues where there'll be another TPB or two past the second omnibus.

Marvel is pure ____. Better to take the 3-4 bucks per issue and go to the back issue bin and pick up some old silver age goodness.

For example:

Would you rather spend 4 bucks on this or 4 bucks reinforcing the fact that Joe Quesada is making great choices as the Editor and Chief of Marvel?

Agree. I pick up various 70's horror and conan comics for cheap.

I wouldn't compare U.S. comics to Anime/Manga. Anime/Manga is often more horrid with simplistic stories that often make absolutely no sense whatsoever. Then there're the filler episodes/issues that are hastily and poorly written solely for the sake of extending the Anime/manga to exploit reader/viewer interest and garner their cash in while the writer's finishing up an episode/book containing the real story. Dragonball GT and the old Full Metal Alchemist series are two blatant examples. Berserker is another example. However, the writer put his foot down and canceled the series. So we'll never see the end because of greed.

That's not to say there aren't good stories. Crying Freeman and Sanctuary enjoyed phenomenal success in Japan due in most part to the author's borrowing of the Western style storytelling.

Anime is a whole different ballgame, but as for Manga there is a whole spectrum of choices, from the most idiotic thing to the most insane stuff american comics are too afraid to go into.
I think your talking about Berserk, if you are follow the manga and see what happens next :D

All gimmicks and sales-promotions aside, if anyones passing on the modern Marvel cosmic stuff, they're missing out. DnA are doing the best work ever in that genre right now..

Aside from that, it's mostly independents that are doing the really good stuff these days. No need to abandon the medium altogther because of Marvels gimmicks.

If you enjoy comics, there is good stuff out there - you just have to put little effort into finding it, and maybe lossen up a little. :lol

Yeah, I don't need to read about Princess Tutu, mothers raping their sons or chicks with wangs thank you. I don't think it's a matter of being "afraid" so much as it is being tasteful. :lol

:lol true, but if it helps the story then why not lol

one of the reasons I stopped reading comics years ago, was they began doing anything with their story lines to up sales.
"Feel free to kill off or screw up ANYBODY ... we'll write our way out of it later ..."

Actually Daredevil is currently being written by Andy Diggle. Diggle took over after Brubaker. I don't believe Fraction was ever on the book.

I always wondered why they change the numbering on comic issues. Same with having several titles. It confuses the lightweight fans who buy th TPB's like me. :lol

I just got into Daredevil a year ago---I do not like when Marvel/DC cancels a run to start another

I got a gimmick they can try. How about great stories with decent art? :huh

The trick is old. It's been told many times.

It's currently being told in:

Captain America
Iron Man
Avengers: Prime
Scarlett
Incognito
Weapon X: Wolverine
Thor
Secret Avengers
Thunderbolts
X-Factor

All of the above, have won numerous awards from Eisner's to online journal awards and are all critically favored.

DC, however, has not "seen" the trick in many years. There most recent attempt was DC Zombi....er...ahem...Blackest Night.

:dunno

Still, I know what you mean. Everything seems to be 'pay more, get less'....

:exactly:

LOL! That must've been a long freakin' time ago, since nearly every major DC character had "died" and "come back to life" at some point.

Yeah, Blackest Night was a Marvel Zombies rip...:rolleyes2

I know, right! Thats what drove me out...too much crappy art and empty stories...and there's all this untapped talent out there. SDCC is littered with all these talented artist and prolific storytellers who can't so much as get noticed by the Marvel/DC big wigs.

Its a real shame how they even do the porfolio reviews :cuckoo:
