Medicom Maul gets my vote...
I love P!tu to death, but he fumbled the hell out of that review. The Medi's costume isn't accurate, the body's too skinny, the likeness of Ray Park isn't there, the body's garbage and the ginormous giraffe neck makes him look like an Auschwitz prisoner. The only thing that Medi has over Sideshow is the boots look better and there's a skin texture to the sculpt.
Michael Crawford reviewed both, and it's a more accurate contrast:
That's completely misleading and takes hours of custom work to get to look remotely like that. Although most of us prefer the Sideshow Darth Maul over the Medicom one, it's best he decides for himself. Corresponding reviews are hotlinked to the text beneath each picture:
if you want a red lightbulb with eyes and horns, and a hasbroish lightsaber, then Medicom is the maul for you.
I would just get SS and put everything on a Pro body.
That's what I've done, and am working on a new head to top it off.
Not seeing it, but that might just be the lack of paint. Great sculpt though. Definitely looking forward to seeing it completed.
I would say both fail with different reasons. SS Maul's head is way to big, and he looks pudgy. Medicom Maul is way too thin and the headscult while looks "cleaner" is less accurate to the actor's face. Additionally, I would say that picture of Medimaul used in the review is the worst angle he can be in as it highlights his thin upper torso.
For the price, probably go with the SS one.
My biggest complaint with the Sideshow is the dead empty doll eyes.
They do both have flaws, straight out of the box though, Sideshow's is a much nicer looking figure. As much as I love Maul, the cloakless shots I did for Sideshow were a pain because he looks pretty ugly with the leg extenders on and no padding on the shoulders, but I had to shoot what would come out of the box and not what the figure could be. With futzing you can make the Medicom figure pretty good looking. My biggest issue with Sideshow's, and it goes for most Sideshow hooded figures, is the size of the hood is too small compared to the film costume.
