I don't know exactly what you mean by "went bad"... Did they go dim at first? Flicker? Did it definitely short out and happen while you were observing it?
Anyway the only experience I have with this is that I bought one for $1400 and the light up didn't work but the problem with it was that the power socket had come loose and when the sabre went in it pushed the whole connection back into the hilt and it wasn't making proper contact with the pins. Once I glued the socket back closer to the front of the connection it fired up fine. If the socket has fried as you suspect then there won't be much saving it unless you can get a replacement from sideshow or have the know how to crack the hilt open and fix whatever is inside.
